Overview

When BMW decides to play the racing card, it doesn't look like anything else. The 2004 vintage R 1100 S Replika is proof that Munich knows how to step outside its comfort zone — the one filled with well-mannered tourers and polished GTs. After a first limited edition in 2003 that sold out instantly, the propeller badge brand comes back with a more radical, more unapologetic version. The livery pops, the colors dare, and for a BMW, that's rare enough to be worth highlighting.

BMW R 1100 S REPLIKA

This Replika is more than just a paint job and stickers. Compared to the standard R 1100 S, it comes equipped with a pair of road-homologated Laser silencers, cycle parts directly derived from the Boxer Cup racing model, and mirrors repositioned on the handlebars rather than on the fork head. That last detail is far from trivial: it's a deliberate nod to track days, where you remove the mirrors in two quick moves before heading out. The sport belly pan and carbon rocker cover trims, reshaped on the sides, complete the picture. Beneath this aggressive bodywork still beats the 1085 cc flat-twin, four valves per cylinder, producing 98 horsepower at 7500 rpm and 95 Nm of torque at 5750 rpm. Restricted in France, the engine can be restored to its full potential on track thanks to an optional Laser ECU module, not included as standard. The 11.3:1 compression ratio confirms that this boxer was built to rev hard and loud.

On the chassis side, the cast aluminum front frame houses the famous Telelever fork, a BMW signature offering 110 mm of travel and unusual braking behavior. At the rear, the Paralever single-sided swingarm with 130 mm of travel works with the shaft drive — a choice that chain purists sometimes view with suspicion, but which, on road and track alike, frees the rider from any maintenance concerns. The brakes mean business: dual 320 mm discs gripped by four-piston calipers up front, a single 276 mm disc at the rear. Notable detail: ABS is deleted on this version. BMW commits to the sporty positioning all the way. No ABS, no options, no panniers. The Replika refuses any touring compromise.

At 229 kg dry and 245 kg wet with its 18-liter tank full, it remains a substantial machine. The 800 mm seat height makes it accessible to most rider builds, and the claimed top speed of 235 km/h clearly places this beast in the territory of the sport-touring machines of its era, up against the likes of the Ducati ST4S or the Honda VTR 1000 SP. The six-speed gearbox does the job with the usual Germanic precision.

At 13,650 euros at the time of release, the R 1100 S Replika was aimed at a very specific audience: the BMW enthusiast who wanted a taste of the racing world without giving up the legendary reliability of the flat-twin. Neither a true track weapon nor a mere dressed-up tourer, it occupied a unique niche. A motorcycle with character, reserved for those who prefer the scent of hot tarmac over the smell of pannier leather.
