Overview
Dressed entirely in matte black, from head to handlebar, this V-twin looks like nothing else in a parking lot. That's precisely what Ducati seeks with the Ducati Monster 821 Dark: to erase colors and retain only forms, this trellis frame taut as a bow, these exposed cylinders, this silhouette that seeks no compromise with road comfort or luggage capacity. It’s a pure naked, one of those you buy because you want it, not because you need it.

Presented as the Ducati Monster 821 Dark 2015 and then continued as the Ducati Monster 821 Dark 2016 with few notable modifications, this dark version of the 821 fully embraces chromatic uniformity. Frame, rims, partial fairings, everything is finished in the same opaque black. Two splashes of color survive this treatment: the yellow spring of the rear shock absorber and the red logo on the 17.5-liter tank. Enough to break the monotony without betraying the concept. The Testastretta 821 cc that beats beneath this bodywork develops 112 horsepower at 9,250 rpm and 89.4 Nm of torque at 7,750 rpm, all housed in a four-valve V2 with liquid cooling. It’s not the most ferocious engine in the category in terms of raw numbers, but it delivers its torque with a frankness that makes corner exits pleasant without requiring you to be a seasoned rider.
The equipment justifies a good portion of the listed €10,260. The 43 mm inverted fork, the adjustable single-sided shock absorber, the Brembo braking system with four-piston calipers at the front, the three-level ABS, the eight-level traction control, and the three riding modes constitute a coherent package for a motorcycle that weighs 205.5 kg in running order. The seat height at 785 mm remains accessible for an average build, and the 220 km/h announced top speed place the machine clearly beyond the power restrictions linked to the A2 license. The Ducati Monster 821 Dark targets the confirmed rider, the one who has been licensed for a few years and seeks character without the compromises of a pure sportbike.
Faced with a Yamaha MT-09 or a KTM Duke 890, Ducati plays on a different register. Less radical than the KTM in engine nervousness, more characterful than the Yamaha in feel, the Dark occupies a particular terrain where visual identity is as important as raw performance. The price, however, remains its weak point: €10,260 for a mid-size naked, it’s a serious commitment, even if the Dark version originally offered a significant difference compared to the standard Monster 821 in traditional colors. The only real regret concerns a design choice: the abandonment of the asymmetrical swingarm, a historic signature of the Monster, in favor of a classic double aluminum swingarm. Functionally impeccable, aesthetically less distinctive.
For whom has the range continued to evolve? The Ducati Monster 821 Dark Stealth 2019 will push the concept even further with a quasi-integral surface treatment, proof that this stylistic direction has found its audience. An audience that doesn’t want a motorcycle that stands out because it’s colored, but because it imposes its presence otherwise.
