Overview

Who still remembers the 748, that little firecracker that launched the dynasty of "mid-size" sportbikes at Ducati? From the 749 to the 848, then the 899, each generation grew in displacement. The Ducati 959 Panigale 2018 is no exception with its 955 cc, yet it remains visually compact, almost deceptively so. The Superquadro V-twin sits in an aluminum monocoque frame so tight you wonder how mechanics manage to squeeze their hands in. This ability to pack so much technology into such a compact package has been the Panigale signature since day one.

Ducati 959 Panigale

Style-wise, the family resemblance with the 1299 is unmistakable. Sharp fairing, aggressive front end, thoroughbred silhouette. Things get less pretty at the rear: the dual side-exit exhaust forced by Euro4 regulations breaks the purity of the lines. Love it or hate it, but the regulatory compromise at least has the merit of unleashing full power on the French market. And there's plenty of power to unleash. The Superquadro delivers 157 horsepower at 10,500 rpm and 102 Nm of torque at 9,000 rpm, thanks to a 100 mm bore and a stroke increased to 60.8 mm. For a twin-cylinder sportbike, that's serious business. The Ducati 959 Panigale actually boasts a displacement nearly identical to the legendary factory 916 Corsa — a nod that purists will appreciate. By comparison, a Yamaha R6 offers a sharper inline-four but with less mid-range torque. The Triumph Daytona 675, another historical rival, has bowed out. The 959's playground sits between the radical sportbike and the accessible machine, a positioning that Bologna knows well.

The onboard electronics place the Ducati 959 Panigale 2018 at the top of what the category had to offer. Three riding modes — Race, Sport, and Wet — with an eight-level adjustable DTC traction control, a three-stage EBC engine brake control, and a Bosch ABS set to three modes. Everything can be customized to the rider's preferences. The DQS quickshifter makes upshifts effortless, although downshifts remain reserved for the bigger Panigale models. A deliberate choice by Ducati to protect the hierarchy within its range. The slipper clutch handles aggressive downshifts without flinching — a real asset for track outings. Because that's exactly where this machine comes into its own.

The scales show 200 kg wet, or 7 kilos more than the 899, mainly due to the dual silencer. Not a deal-breaker. The chassis relies on a fully adjustable 43 mm inverted fork and a lateral shock absorber, all built around a 1,431 mm wheelbase slightly lengthened for added stability. Braking is handled by Brembo M4.32 four-piston calipers on 320 mm discs, doing the job with precision, even if purists will note the absence of the M50 units reserved for higher-tier models. The seat perched at 830 mm and the 17-liter tank allow for decent track sessions without refueling every twenty minutes. The Ducati 959 Panigale reaches a top speed of 270 km/h, which gives a clear idea of its level of ambition.

Priced at €16,990 new, the Ducati 959 Panigale slots in nearly €5,000 below the 1299. No single-sided swingarm, no inertial measurement unit, no color TFT display. These concessions maintain the hierarchy at Ducati, but they also preserve what matters most: the thrill of riding an Italian sportbike without needing the forearms of a lumberjack. For the intermediate rider looking for a genuine track-ready sportbike for weekend use, or for anyone wanting a taste of the Panigale universe without mortgaging their house, the 959 remains a smart choice. It can be found today on the used market at prices that make the proposition even more appealing, especially compared to the Ducati 959 Panigale Corse, which added a few refinements for the more demanding. Between the 899 it inherited from and the V2 that would succeed it, the 959 stands as the Superquadro's last breath in this displacement class. A charismatic engine, an effective chassis, and drop-dead looks despite those unsightly exhaust cans. Hard to hold a grudge for long.
