Overview
We still remember the shock. In the early 2000s, arriving on the market of sportbikes with a twin-cylinder engine facing the hegemony of Japanese inline-fours required courage. The Ducati 749 S of 2003 was this provocation embodied in metal. It wasn't there to play a cameo role, but to prove that a radically different mechanical philosophy could hold its own on the road as well as on the track.

Under its taut fairing, the soul of this Italian beats to the rhythm of a 748 cm3 Testastretta V2, a notable evolution that breathes 103 horsepower at 10,000 rpm. The raw figures, 77 Nm of torque at 8,500 rpm, may seem modest compared to a GSX-R 750 of the time. But that's not a flaw at all, it's a choice. This engine demands commitment; you have to rev it to deliver its raw symphony and its frank thrust, a sensation much more organic and brutal than the aseptic linearity of its competitors. To ride a Ducati 749 S, you have to accept it as it is: a precision weapon that rewards anticipation and maintaining engine speeds.
And indeed, to channel this energy, the S version doesn't skimp on equipment. We are clearly on a base close to the factory. The 43 mm inverted Showa fork, the rear shock of the same brand, the radial master cylinder and the four-piston calipers forge a chassis of stunning clarity. With a dry weight announced at 199 kg and a wheelbase of 1420 mm, it transmits to the handlebars information of absolute purity. The rigidity of the trellis frame and the committed riding position (seat at 780 mm) make it a demanding machine, which does not forgive approximations but transforms each tight turn into an exercise of pure mechanical satisfaction.
So, for whom is this Ducati 749 S made today, especially if one is looking for a used model? Certainly not for a beginner, nor for the touring rider in search of comfort. It is the ideal mount of the enlightened track rider or the lover of old-school sportbikes, the one who seeks a raw riding experience, charged with emotion, far from the omnipresent electronic assistance of today. Its 15.5-liter tank recalls that it is made for intense sessions, not road trips. The 2004 to 2006 models refined the concept, but the essence remains the same.
Looking at the technical specifications of the Ducati 749 S of the time, one understands that it never sought to be the most powerful or the easiest. It was a manifesto, proof that character and commitment counted as much as the stopwatch. Today, it represents a segment of pure sportbikes that has now disappeared, a golden opportunity for those who want to live a motorcycle story, not just endure it. A test of the Ducati 749 S remains a lesson in things: sometimes, having less horsepower but more soul, that's what true performance is.
