Overview
When Ducati decided to turn its 748 into a homologated track weapon for the World Supersport Championship, the result bore a sharp, no-frills name: the 748 R. Model year 2001, production limited to a thousand units per year, and a price tag that flirted with 15,500 euros at the time. Nearly the cost of a 996. The message was clear: this Ducati 748 R is no toy for quiet Sunday rides.

Beneath the bodywork carrying the legendary lines inherited from the 916, Ducati slipped in the chrome-molybdenum steel tube trellis frame from the 996 raced in World Superbike. A racing chassis, plain and simple. It houses a larger airbox, now made of carbon fiber, and receives the finest suspension available: 43 mm Öhlins inverted fork up front, Öhlins monoshock at the rear. Five-spoke Marchesini wheels shed precious weight, and the dual front disc brakes come straight from the 996 R. The result: 192 kg dry on the scales. For an Italian twin packed with top-shelf components, that's a remarkable achievement.
The 748 cc Desmoquattro V-twin was thoroughly reworked. New camshafts, upgraded injection, lightened crankshaft and pistons: the engine climbs to 106 horsepower at 11,500 rpm with 75 Nm of torque at 9,000 rpm. With the carbon Termignoni kit and its dedicated mapping, it can tickle 112 horsepower. The 11.3:1 compression ratio and 88 mm bore paired with a short 61.5 mm stroke betray an engine designed to live in the upper rev range. Low-end tractability? Forget it. This twin demands to be wrung past 7,000 rpm to deliver its full potential, and its 260 km/h top speed confirms that the Ducati 748 R's spec sheet is no joke.
On the road, this sportbike proves utterly uncompromising. The seat perched at 790 mm, the short 1,410 mm wheelbase, and the forward-leaning position over the 17-liter tank spell out a program built for tight corners and hard braking. Against the Japanese 600s of the era—the CBR, ZX-6R, and R6—the 748 R plays in a league of its own. Less versatile, less docile, but endowed with a character and mechanical nobility that Japanese four-cylinders simply cannot offer. Every burst of acceleration is accompanied by the raspy voice of the Italian twin, and the chassis responds with surgical precision when you know how to push it.
Today, finding a used Ducati 748 R is a treasure hunt. The Ducati 748 R's value keeps climbing, driven by its collector status and rarity. Whether a 2000 or 2002 model, every example ages with grace. You occasionally spot a yellow Ducati 748 R turning every head in a paddock. This motorcycle is meant for demanding riders, for those who want a raw sensory experience every time they hit the track—not for motorcyclists seeking comfort or versatility. The 748 R is a machine that demands commitment, real riding skill, and returns a hundredfold what you give it. A true Ducati racer, simply dressed for the road.
