Overview

What drove Ducati, in the year 2000, to price its 748 R nearly as high as a 996? The answer comes down to three letters: WSS. This bike was never designed for a run to the corner shop. It's a track weapon, produced in a mere 1,000 units per year, built to homologate racing equipment for the Supersport World Championship. And you can feel it in every detail of the spec sheet.

Ducati 748 R

The 748 cc Desmoquattro V-twin, fed by 54 mm throttle bodies and fitted with dedicated camshafts, pumps out 106 horsepower at 11,000 rpm. A figure that climbs to 112 hp with the carbon Termignoni kit and its dedicated ECU map. The 74.5 Nm of torque at 9,000 rpm confirms what your right wrist figures out very quickly: this engine gives you nothing down low — you have to chase it up in the rev range. Forget the tractability of a road-going twin; this powerplant politely refuses any urban duty. The 2000 Ducati 748 R doesn't invite you to ride — it orders you to race.

Beneath the fairing, Bologna pulled no punches. The chrome-moly trellis frame is the same one used on the 996 entered in World Superbike. It houses an enlarged airbox and receives top-shelf Showa suspension: a 43 mm inverted fork up front, a rear monoshock out back, with 120 and 130 mm of travel respectively. The five-spoke Marchesini wheels, lighter than those on the standard 748, help keep dry weight under 192 kg. The braking hardware comes straight from the 996 R. With a 1,410 mm wheelbase and a seat height of 790 mm, the bike places itself with surgical precision through corners — provided you know what to do with your body positioning. A 17-litre tank allows for decent stints on track, less so on the road where spirited riding shortens the intervals between fuel stops.

Against the competition of its era, the Ducati 748 R was playing on an entirely different field than the Japanese 600s. A ZX-6R or an R6 offered a more rational price-to-performance ratio, but not that mechanical texture, not that visual presence inherited from the 916, not that raw character of an Italian twin pulsing through the frame. At €15,500 new, it was the price of an exceptional machine. Today, finding a used Ducati 748 R is a treasure hunt. Values are climbing, well-maintained examples are growing scarce, and special versions like the yellow Ducati 748 R have become full-fledged collector's items.

This bike is aimed at an experienced audience. Not at the beginner looking for a first sportbike, not at the touring rider who devours miles. The rider who knows how to exploit a chassis of this caliber, who accepts the demands of a high-strung engine and uncompromising ergonomics, will find in the 748 R a track partner capable of delivering sensations that no Japanese four-cylinder of the same displacement has ever managed to replicate. It's a motorcycle that demands respect — and returns it a hundredfold, corner after corner.
