Overview
What drove Ducati, in 2002, to price its 748 R nearly as high as a 996? The answer comes down to three letters: WSS. This R version was never designed for running errands. It's a homologation on wheels, a passport to the Supersport World Championship, produced in just 1,000 units per year. And at 15,500 euros at the time, you really had to want to ride in an exclusive club to sign the check.

Beneath the bodywork inherited from the legendary 916, the Ducati 748 R 2002 hides a chassis borrowed directly from the 996 campaigned in World Superbike. A chrome-molybdenum steel tube trellis frame, rigid and precise, housing a larger carbon airbox. The suspension is Öhlins through and through, with a 43 mm inverted fork and a mono-shock of the same pedigree. The five-spoke Marchesini wheels shed weight where it matters most, and the braking system also comes from the 996 R. The result: the beast tips the scales at 192 kg dry. For an Italian sportbike of that era, that's a remarkable achievement.
The 748 cc Desmoquattro V-twin produces 106 horsepower at 11,500 rpm and 75 Nm of torque at 9,000 rpm. Those figures were achieved through new camshafts, lighter pistons and crankshaft, plus larger-diameter fuel injection. With the carbon Termignoni kit and dedicated ECU map, output climbs to 112 horsepower. But make no mistake, this engine makes no effort to be friendly. Below 6,000 rpm, it drags its feet. You have to thrash it, keep it in its sweet spot for it to give everything. The 11.3:1 compression ratio and generous 88 mm bore confirm the purely sporting vocation of this twin.
On the road, the Ducati 748 R proves as demanding as it is rewarding. The seat perched at 790 mm, the short 1,410 mm wheelbase, and the aggressive riding position leave no doubt about its intentions. The 17-liter tank offers decent range, but in the hands of a committed rider, it empties as fast as the speedometer climbs toward the claimed 260 km/h. Compared to the Japanese 600s of the era — the CBR, ZX-6R, and R6 — the 748 R plays in a different league. Less versatile, less docile, but endowed with a character and mechanical nobility that those inline-fours simply cannot match.
Today, finding a used Ducati 748 R is a treasure hunt. The Ducati 748 R's value climbs steadily, driven by collectors and enthusiasts of authentic Italian track machines. Whether in its traditional red livery or the rare yellow Ducati 748 R, this motorcycle remains one of the most desirable sportbikes of its generation. It's not aimed at beginners or casual Sunday riders. It's a rider's machine, designed for the track, one that rewards skill and punishes sloppiness. And that is precisely why we love it.
