Overview

In 2004, Ducati was riding the pop culture wave with a boldness few Italian manufacturers dared to embrace. After dressing up its 998 in Matrix colors, Bologna applied the concept to its small Monster 620, a limited edition draped in a dark green directly inspired by the universe of Neo and company. The tank featured the famous cascading code lines pattern against a black background, an unapologetic nod to the late-90s blockbuster. Marketing gimmick or genuinely good idea? A bit of both, probably. But you had to admit that this livery gave the little Monster a look that the standard color options simply couldn't match.

Ducati 620 MONSTER S MATRIX

Beneath this cinematic skin lay the well-known mechanicals of the Monster 620: an air and oil-cooled 618 cc V-twin, set at the 90-degree angle that Bolognese tradition demands. With 60 horsepower delivered at 9,500 rpm and 53 Nm of torque available from 6,750 rpm, this was no track weapon. But the Monster philosophy was never about raw performance. This two-valve-per-cylinder, fuel-injected engine offered crisp throttle response and an endearing character in the midrange. The five-speed gearbox was more than adequate for city riding and back roads, even if a sixth gear would have made highway stints less droning. Claimed top speed: 186 km/h. Respectable for a machine that never pretended to play in the sportbike league.

The tubular steel trellis frame, a visual signature of the Monster family, housed a 43 mm inverted fork and a rear monoshock. Nothing competition-adjustable, but the package remained well-balanced for a motorcycle weighing 193 kg wet. The braking setup, with its twin 320 mm front discs clamped by four-piston calipers, proved reassuring and generously sized for the bike's stature. The seat, perched at just 770 mm, made it a natural ally for shorter riders or beginners looking to plant their feet without anxiety. A 15-liter tank meant regular fuel stops on longer trips, but nobody bought a Monster 620 to cross Europe without pulling over.

Against the competition of the era, this 620 went head-to-head with the Suzuki SV 650 and Yamaha FZ6, rivals often better endowed in power and equipment for a comparable price. At €8,495, the Matrix played the exclusivity card rather than the value-for-money one. You were paying for the Ducati badge, the exposed trellis, the V-twin sound, and a livery that turned heads at every red light. Alongside the Capirex and Catwoman editions offered the same year, the Monster 620 Matrix was part of a themed-variant strategy that appealed to collectors and fans of slightly offbeat machines.

In hindsight, this little Ducati remains an endearing machine. Not the most powerful, not the best equipped, but blessed with a character that Japanese roadsters of the same era struggled to match. A motorcycle built for the city and Sunday rides, carried by a style that made you forget the modesty of its spec sheet. For a first-time Ducati buyer or a film fan who wanted to ride in Matrix green, it was a credible entry ticket into the world of Borgo Panigale.
