Overview

Richard Mille makes watches costing €500,000 worn on the wrists of Formula 1 drivers. Brough Superior, resurrected in Toulouse, sculpts its motorcycles from solid material for a clientele that has never opened an insurance comparison website. When these two houses decide to work together, the result is not a production model. It’s called the RMB01, initials crossed like a signature on an exceptional contract, produced in 150 units and priced at €240,000 net of tax.

Before even mentioning the engine, it’s necessary to focus on what you see. Or rather, what you don’t see: superfluous material. The frame is machined from aluminum, the rear structure is forged carbon, the swingarm is hollowed out like a piece of industrial jewelry. No titanium here, unlike other Broughs, but an aesthetic consistency that runs through every component. The half handlebars integrate hydraulic controls in a single block. The rims are bolted to the hub spokes. The Fior-type fork, openwork, extends this logic to the ground. One can discuss the front winglets, these small spoilers borrowed from track machines, which, depending on taste, lighten or weigh down the silhouette. Their role is functional at 250 km/h, the top speed announced, but their presence remains debatable on a machine intended to be ridden so rarely.

The French V-twin at 88 degrees has been running in the standard Brough range for years around 100 horsepower. On the RMB01, it climbs to 130 horsepower for 997 cm3. It’s not an explosion of raw power, but a precise calibration for a lightweight machine whose vocation is not to break records at the Nürburgring. What makes this engine unique is its manufacturing process. A 160-kilo aluminum-magnesium alloy block passes under a five-axis CNC mill, and 23 kilos of engine parts emerge. A 6-speed gearbox transmits all this via chain. Simple, efficient, consistent with the spirit of a very high-end sports motorcycle rather than a competition prototype.

The dashboard deserves attention. Its design is directly inspired by Richard Mille’s horological complications, this way of exposing the gears as many aesthetic arguments. It’s exactly what Bugatti did with its Tourbillon, and it’s successful on both sides. One perceives here something that most luxury motorcycle manufacturers miss: the consistency between the partner and the product. The association with Aston Martin for the AMB 001 and AMB 001 Pro had produced magnificent track machines but reserved for a few private circuits. The RMB01 aims for a different use, or at least claims to. The very stretched riding position suggests long, open roads more than a Sunday tour of the block.

Brough Superior RMB01

At €240,000 apiece for 150 units worldwide, the typical buyer does not consult consumption figures. He arbitrates between a Ferrari GTC4Lusso and this Brough, and he might choose both. What the RMB01 really offers is an object that simultaneously belongs to the world of motorcycles and that of collector's items. The two exposed exhaust pipes, in an assumed hot-rod style, recall that there is indeed an engine in there and that this engine knows how to make itself heard. For the rest, knowing whether this machine will ever be ridden other than at low speed on the coastal roads of southern France remains an open question. But that’s not really the right criterion for judging a Richard Mille watch either.
