Overview

When BMW launched the R Nine-T, the Bavarian manufacturer knew it was opening Pandora's box. A spirited flat-twin, a modular chassis, and retro lines just stripped-back enough to spark ideas in every tinkerer across France and beyond. It didn't take long for custom builders to get their hands on the beast. Among them, Toulouse-based workshop Boxer Design struck a clean blow by signing off on a Cafe Racer variant produced in just 90 numbered units, distributed through the official BMW Motorrad France dealer network from February 2015 onward. The move is rare: a hand-built custom sold through dealerships, with the factory warranty thrown in.

On the mechanical side, nothing changes, and that's a good thing. The 1,170 cc flat-twin retains its 110 horsepower at 7,750 rpm and, more importantly, its generous 118.7 Nm of torque available from 6,000 rpm. This four-valve-per-cylinder boxer with its 12:1 compression ratio remains one of the Nine-T's strongest arguments: a frank, linear surge that grips the tarmac without brutality. The shaft drive and six-speed gearbox deliver the kind of long-haul reliability that chain enthusiasts will never know. The 222 kg wet weight remains contained for a machine of this size, and the 785 mm seat height lets most riders plant their feet without worry.

Where Boxer Design makes the difference is in the bodywork. The black livery accented with a double white pinstripe recalls the historic graphic codes of the propeller brand. A carbon fiber headlight fairing tops the 46 mm inverted fork, while a single-seat carbon cowl transforms the rear end by visually eliminating the pillion. The passenger seat remains accessible, however, since the piece is removable. The flat handlebar with billet-machined bar ends, black anodized aluminum mirrors, and the road-legal Akrapovic dual-outlet silencer complete the picture. Even the headers receive careful treatment with their black exhaust wrap. Every detail, down to the engraved plate on the camshaft covers and the unit number on the dashboard, speaks to serious craftsmanship.

The price tag of 18,990 euros places this Cafe Racer in an interesting zone. We're talking roughly 5,000 euros more than a stock Nine-T of the era, for a machine hand-assembled in Toulouse with exclusive parts not available individually. Against a Triumph Thruxton R or a Ducati Scrambler Cafe Racer released a few months later, the proposition is different: this isn't a catalog model, but a semi-confidential object backed by the ruggedness of a BMW flat-twin. The braking system, with its twin 320 mm discs and radial-mount four-piston calipers up front, and the single-sided Paralever swingarm at the rear serve as reminders that beneath the retro veneer lies a modern, capable chassis.

This BMW R 1200 Nine-T reimagined by Boxer Design targets a specific audience: the rider who wants a distinctive machine without sacrificing reliability or dealer support. Ninety units is rare enough to encounter few clones at Sunday meetups, yet common enough to find parts and a competent dealer if something goes wrong. It's a balance that few custom builds manage to strike.
