Overview
Can you really call it a sportbike when you're riding a 245 kg flat twin? BMW has always had its own way of shaking up conventions, and the R 1100 S is the rolling proof. With this 2003 Replika edition, the Bavarian firm pushes the envelope one notch further in terms of showmanship. Blue and white checkerboard livery plastered across the fairing, color-matched wheels, a racing belly pan, and above all those famous carbon rocker cover caps adorned with fake wear marks, as if the bike had just come back from a Boxer Cup race. The nod is deliberate, almost theatrical. You either love it or find it a bit forced, but you have to admit the styling has character.

Beneath the track-bike disguise, the mechanicals remain those of the standard R 1100 S. The 1085 cc flat-twin delivers 98 horsepower at 7500 rpm and 95 Nm of torque peaking at 5750 rpm. These aren't figures that would make a Ducati 998 or a Honda VFR 800 tremble, but the boxer doesn't play in the same league. Its sweet spot lies between 3000 and 5000 rpm, where the engine pulls with a smoothness and willingness that Japanese four-cylinders simply don't possess. The comparison with the VFR is actually apt: this is more of a sport-tourer capable of devouring mountain passes with ease than a tool built for lap times. The six-speed gearbox gets the job done without any particular brilliance, slightly slow in its engagement, and the shaft drive adds that typically BMW smoothness, for better or worse.
Where the R 1100 S Replika scores points is in its well-balanced chassis. The cast aluminum front frame, the Telelever fork with 110 mm of travel, and the Paralever single-sided swingarm at the rear form a chassis of remarkable stability. Braking, handled by two 320 mm front discs gripped by four-piston calipers, proves powerful and progressive. Confidence builds quickly, even though the bike demands an adjustment period. It doesn't reveal itself at the first corner. You have to accept its pace, understand how it carries its mass into a bend, and only then does the pleasure set in. The 800 mm seat height and the slightly forward-leaning riding position strike a fair compromise between sporty commitment and long-distance comfort. The 18-liter tank provides decent range for weekend rides without multiplying fuel stops.
The real question with this Replika is the premium asked over the standard S. At 13,650 euros in 2003, BMW was essentially charging for an exclusive livery and recalibrated shock springs. Nothing more on the mechanical front. For a collector or a Boxer Cup enthusiast, the rarity may justify the expense. For a rider seeking an unconventional sport-tourer capable of reaching 235 km/h while remaining civilized for daily use, the standard version does exactly the same job. The R 1100 S Replika remains an endearing motorcycle, a sportbike that owns its difference with flair, but one that beneath its racing decals is above all a fast tourer dressed up for the ball.
