Overview

Unveiled in Pesaro in 2004, Benelli's roadster had already built a reputation before the first example ever turned a wheel on public roads. Hard to miss: the TNT 1130 looks like something drawn by an engineer under maximum pressure on the night of a deadline. The frontal view is predatory, the lateral radiators evoke insect appendages, and the whole thing gives the impression of an industrial prototype that accidentally escaped the design office. No coincidence. Benelli wanted to make a statement, and on visual terms alone, the gamble paid off.

Beneath this radical bodywork lies an engine derived from the Tornado, the sports bike the Italian brand had released a few years earlier. The inline three-cylinder sees its displacement increased to 1,130 cc, with an 88 mm bore, a 62 mm stroke, and a compression ratio of 11.5:1. The result: 135 horsepower at 9,250 rpm and, more notably, 117.7 Nm at 6,500 rpm. This torque, available at a reasonable rev range, places the TNT in a muscular register that many of its contemporaries could not claim to match. For comparison, a Yamaha R1 of the era delivered around 106 Nm, and a Kawasaki ZX-12R around 120 Nm. Not bad for a naked bike.

The chassis is a steel tubular trellis connected to cast elements — an architecture reminiscent of the Brutale from MV Agusta, a direct competitor and aesthetic benchmark in the segment. The rear subframe serves as seat support, exhaust mounting point, and passenger grab handle housing, all within a minimal footprint. The 50 mm inverted fork with 120 mm of travel and the rear monoshock with the same stroke manage the machine's 199 kg dry weight. That figure remains reasonable for the size, and a seat height of 780 mm makes the TNT accessible to riders of average build. A six-speed gearbox transmits power via chain, and braking relies on two 320 mm discs up front with four-piston calipers, and a single 240 mm disc at the rear.

The question of the target audience deserves to be addressed plainly. This Benelli is not for beginners, nor for long-distance touring enthusiasts. With its 17-litre tank, compact proportions, and razor-sharp power delivery, the TNT 1130 is aimed at experienced riders seeking a characterful machine — urban and fast, capable of reaching 240 km/h when the road allows. Its price of €12,900 at the time placed it against the Ducati Monster S4R, more refined but less visually spectacular, and against the MV Agusta Brutale, more expensive and more exclusive.

What truly sets the TNT apart is this combination of raw visual presence and engine muscle. Not a versatile all-rounder, not a touring bike, not a tool for the faint-hearted. A machine built for those who want to feel every kilometre and ask nothing gentle from their motorcycle. Compromises exist, notably in passenger ergonomics and near-total absence of storage, but that is not where the TNT's reputation is made. Benelli demonstrated in 2004 that a second-tier Italian manufacturer could shake up the established large-displacement segment, and this feisty three-cylinder remains to this day a collector's piece for enthusiasts of unconventional roadsters.
