Overview

Pesaro has always played the tune of atypical engines: three-cylinder 899s, 1130s, engines with a recognizable sound, an identity forged on singularity. So when the brand with the lion released a 600 cc inline four-cylinder roadster in 2014, the least one can say is that the casting was surprising. The Benelli BN 600 R doesn’t cheat on its origins for long: behind the Italian badge hides a motorcycle designed and produced in China by Qianjiang, owner of Benelli since 2005. A group that ships more than one million two-wheeled vehicles annually around the planet, which at least demands a minimum of respect before uttering grand words.

Benelli BN 600 R

The engine, therefore. Inline four-cylinder, 599 cc, injection, sixteen valves, a compression ratio of 11.5:1 for a bore of 65 mm and a short stroke of 45.2 mm. The engine peaks at 82 horsepower at 11,500 rpm and delivers 55 Nm at 10,500 rpm. These figures don’t shake many people in the category. A Triumph Street Triple or a Honda Hornet 600 in their best form easily exceed 100 horsepower, and even mid-range roadsters like the Kawasaki ER-6n or the Yamaha XJ6 offer better-tuned engines for the performance-price ratio. The Benelli BN 600 R’s opinion shared among enthusiasts is understood here: the available power positions the machine more as an entry point into the segment than as a direct rival to the Japanese references. It is moreover on this ground that the motorcycle becomes interesting for the A2 license, the 82 horsepower lending themselves to a coherent derestriction with regulatory constraints, and the Benelli BN 600 R A2 has logically found its public among new license holders.

It is in the technical specifications that truly surprises, it is in the mechanical trim. For a motorcycle of this size and this price positioning, the equipment flirts with higher categories. The 50 mm diameter Marzocchi inverted fork, the double 320 mm discs bitten by radial four-piston calipers, an aluminum swingarm worthy of a supersport, 120/70-ZR17 tires at the front and 180/55-ZR17 at the rear on 17-inch rims, a hybrid frame combining steel trellis at the front and aluminum casting at the rear. On paper, one would almost expect to find a circuit registration plate. The question that remains pending concerns the intrinsic quality of these components, because displaying the right dimensions does not guarantee the right sensations. The Benelli BN 600 R technical specifications impress when read, but the test of time and kilometers will say what these Chinese-origin parts are really worth.

The style, however, hesitates. The design is neither inconsistent nor bold. The silencers housed under the seat, the radiator flanked by sharp scoops, the laterally offset mono-shock give a silhouette that seeks to convince without ever imposing itself. The front optical unit vaguely recalls the TNT 899 and 1130 from Pesaro, which maintains a family continuity without a true character of its own. For a buyer looking for a naked with assumed Italian styling, disappointment is possible. For someone who is primarily looking for a practical, well-equipped, and affordable mid-size roadster, the equation changes.

Displayed at 7,495 euros at launch, the price remains within the range of the segment without constituting the price revolution that could have changed everything. On the Benelli BN 600 R used market, prices have since stabilized at accessible levels, making it a credible option for an intermediate motorcyclist looking to progress. As for the price of a Benelli BN 600 R 2016, it generally oscillates between 4,000 and 5,500 euros depending on the condition and mileage, which reinforces its attractiveness on the used market. There remains a real unknown about long-term durability and the after-sales network, two points on which the brand still needs to build trust in Europe.
