Overview
When Yamaha decided to evolve its FZ6 into the S2 version, the Iwata manufacturer wasn't looking for a visual showstopper. The changes happen beneath the skin, where it truly matters. A hexagonal-section swingarm, stiffer, that sharpens cornering behavior. Monobloc brake calipers for a more decisive bite on the two 298 mm front discs squeezed by four-piston calipers. A revised engine mapping, paired with a reworked exhaust system. And to top it all off, instrumentation borrowed from the big sister FZ1. On paper, nothing revolutionary. On the road, the difference is felt with every hard brake and every corner entry.

The 600 cc inline four-cylinder stays true to the model's philosophy: 98 horsepower available at 12,000 rpm and 63.2 Nm of torque peaking at 10,000 rpm. This engine loves to rev — you have to wring it out to extract the good stuff, but it rewards the rider who dares to climb through the rev range. With its 201 kg wet weight and a 19.4-liter tank allowing decent range, the 2010 Yamaha FZ6 600 S2 positions itself as a versatile roadster, capable of handling the daily commute without complaint before heading out to carve a winding back road on the weekend. The entirely redesigned seat, perched 795 mm off the ground, comfortably accommodates most body types. The passenger isn't forgotten either: the footpegs, now removable and positioned lower, gain a rubber coating that improves comfort on long rides.
Against the competition of its era, the FZ6 S2 plays in the same league as the Suzuki GSR 600 and Kawasaki ER-6n, but with a sportier temperament thanks to its four-cylinder that pushes hard at the top end. The Honda Hornet 600 remains its most direct rival, and the contest comes down to details: the Yamaha banks on a die-cast aluminum frame and properly calibrated suspension, with a 43 mm telescopic hydraulic fork offering 130 mm of travel at both the front and rear via the mono-shock. Not enough to rival high-end suspension, but the package remains well-balanced for mixed road and city use.
That leaves the question many are asking: what is the price of a 2010 Yamaha FZ6 600 S2? At launch, the price tag read 6,699 euros, placing it right in the heart of the mid-displacement roadster market. A shrewd positioning, especially since ABS was offered as an option across all versions. Yamaha also kept the older FZ6 in the lineup, restricted to 78 horsepower and sold for less, to cast a wider net. Today on the used market, this S2 represents a safe bet for a rider looking for a first full-size roadster or a reliable everyday machine. The Yamaha engine has proven itself in terms of longevity, and parts are easy to find. Not the most exciting bike of its generation, but one you can count on with your eyes closed.
