Overview
Winning a race is one thing. Knowing how to tell the story on the bike that follows is another. Aprilia has chosen to capitalize on its victory at the Africa Eco Race to offer a Rally version of the Aprilia Tuareg 660, refined in its presentation and more radical in its settings. The message is clear: this machine is not here to play a cameo role in the adventure category.

On paper, the technical specifications of the Aprilia Tuareg 660 remain identical to those revealed by previous years’ tests to the general public. The 659 cm3 inline twin-cylinder engine, timed at 270 degrees, delivers 80 horsepower at 9,250 rpm and 70 Nm of torque at 6,500 rpm. This engine comes directly from the RS 660, a pure sports bike that served as its template. For the 2025 Rally version, Aprilia adopts wider throttle bodies at 52 mm versus 48 previously, a modification that does not inflate the figures but preserves power despite the tightening of Euro 5+ standards. The mapping also receives a more aggressive touch, with a more responsive throttle response coming out of corners. At 204 kg fully fueled, or about 4 kg less than some previous configurations, the machine remains among the lightest in its class, a massive argument as soon as the tarmac gives way to the track.
The visual differentiation comes through codes borrowed from the world of competition. High-mounted mudguard, imposing and reinforced engine guard, SC Project titanium muffler, spoked wheels in a gold color that dialogues with the 43 mm fully adjustable Kayaba fork. The seat is raised by 20 mm, the handlebars also, to favor a standing position in difficult sections. The 5-inch screen remains oriented horizontally, which some pilots accustomed to the road-book will note as a lack compared to what the Yamaha Ténéré 700 or the Kove 800 X offer. The tank, for its part, remains at 18 liters, where other manufacturers take advantage of the rally version to enlarge it. At 4 liters per 100 km in reasonable use, autonomy remains correct without being generous. The electronics are comprehensive: traction control, adjustable engine braking, four riding modes including two customizable and an off-road mode, cruise control, ABS disconnectable at the rear or on both wheels. For a motorcycle accessible with an A2 license with restriction, the level of sophistication is real.

The Kayaba suspensions retain a 240 mm stroke, but the springs are no longer progressive on the Rally. Direct consequence: the riding comfort on degraded surfaces is tightened, the motorcycle becomes more physically demanding to ride quickly in rough terrain. This is not a criticism, but an assumed positioning choice. The target audience is not the tourist who seeks cruising comfort, but the rider who wants to get off the beaten path with a machine designed to absorb impacts. The air-filled spoked wheels, slightly narrower than on the standard model, fit into the same logic.

The real debate surrounding the Aprilia Tuareg 660 revolves around its price. At €13,999, the Rally version costs significantly more than a Yamaha Ténéré 700 Rally, displayed between €11,199 and €12,399 depending on the configuration. The smaller displacement of the Italian motorcycle, which some fans of the genre have always considered a handicap compared to the 700 or 800 cm3 of the competition, comes with a higher price tag. And it's no longer just Japan that must be looked at in the rearview mirror. Chinese manufacturers now offer serious machines, such as the CF Moto 800 MT-X at €9,999, which makes the Italian bill even more difficult to justify for the novice. Those looking for a used Aprilia Tuareg 660 may find their balance, but new, Aprilia is clearly playing in a premium niche that it must defend with solid arguments. It has them. It remains to convince that the name and the finishes are worth this difference.
