Overview
Do you remember the first time you discovered a Yamaha R6? In 1999, it arrived as a revolution, a projectile designed for the track. At low RPM, it behaved almost like a civilized motorcycle. But as soon as the tachometer passed 10,000 RPM, it transformed into a mechanical fury, with a post-combustion that made you grimace with pleasure under your helmet. This raw, almost primal sensation defined the 600 sportbike identity for two decades.

To celebrate this anniversary, a Japanese importer linked to Yamaha, Presto Corporation, created a unique example named "20th Anniversary." This 2019 R6 features a white and red livery that faithfully reproduces the original 1999’s graphics, a very well-executed nostalgic nod. Be warned, this is not an official Yamaha edition, so no serialized goodies: no specific exhaust, no racing parts. It was presented at a Sugo circuit owner’s meeting and was intended to be won by lottery. An initiative that made fans salivate, but leaves a feeling of incompleteness: why doesn’t Yamaha launch its own limited series for enthusiasts?
Between the 1999 R6 and the 2019 model, the evolution is spectacular. The classic fork has been replaced by a 43 mm inverted fork worthy of an R1, with radial brakes and monoblock calipers. The Deltabox aluminum frame, cast under pressure, variable intake, quickshifter, traction control, and three injection maps have transformed the motorcycle. It has gained sophistication and precision, but has lost a bit of its original madness with the carburetors. The announced power of 118 horsepower at 14,500 RPM and a torque of 61.8 Nm at 10,500 RPM remain at the top of the class for a 600, even if anti-pollution standards have slightly calmed its exuberance. On the track, with a free-flowing exhaust, it regains all its nervousness.
At €15,000, this anniversary version remains a collector's item, a tribute. The standard R6, on the other hand, continues to position itself as a reference for pure track riders. Its weight of 190 kg fully fueled, a seat height of 850 mm, and a 17-liter tank clearly destine it for competition or trackday days. Compared to its competitors like the Honda CBR600RR or the Kawasaki ZX-6R, it may offer less daily versatility, but on a circuit, its chassis and high-revving engine remain compelling arguments.
It is a motorcycle that makes no concessions. It demands from the rider, it vibrates with an intensity that beginners could not master. For those seeking a 600 sportbike focused on pure performance, the R6, especially in this anniversary livery, is a symbol. A symbol of what Yamaha has been able to create: a machine that, even twenty years later, continues to make speed enthusiasts shiver.
