Overview
Who said that true muscle was hidden under an American hood? In 2009, Yamaha threw a stone into the pond of large cruisers with the XV1900A Midnight Star, an air-cooled V2 of 1854 cm3 that defies the hegemony of Milwaukee and Nagoya. Here is a machine that doesn’t do things by halves, a 346 kg (wet) block that bets everything on raw feel and torque that will pull your shoulders out of their sockets.

Beneath this deluge of chrome beats a new heart for the brand. This V-twin engine, air-cooled and assisted by an oil circuit, is a masterpiece of engineering. With only 100 horsepower at 4750 rpm, one might smile, but that misses the essential point. Its true talent lies in its 155 Nm of torque, available from 2500 rpm. This isn't about power, it's about pure traction, a wave of constant force that propels this behemoth with seemingly no effort. The double-shaft balancing system does its job, letting through just enough vibrations to remind you that you are riding a living animal, without ever becoming unpleasant. Facing it, a Kawasaki VN 2000 boasts more displacement, but the Midnight Star plays the card of sophistication and a more civilized power delivery.
The look is a statement in itself. This isn’t a custom, it’s a rolling monument. The wheelbase of 1715 mm, the wide tires, the spoked rims and this generous exhaust pipe give it a stage presence. Yet, beneath the retro appearance, Yamaha played the card of modernity. The frame is a pressure-cast aluminum double cradle, a technique inherited from the R1 sportbike, to lighten the beast and gain rigidity. The result is a dry weight of 320 kg, which remains, let's admit, considerable, but which is handled with surprising stability once underway. The low seat at 705 mm is a deceptive friend; it facilitates handling but doesn't mask the mass when stopped.
So, who is the Yamaha XV1900a Midnight Star for? Certainly not for a beginner, nor for the rider seeking sporty sensations. Its audience is experienced tourers who prioritize style, comfort, and that feeling of infinite torque on open roads. With its 17-liter tank and a top speed announced at 210 km/h, it is made to devour long straight stretches without a tremor. The braking, with its two front discs, is up to the mass, without being transcendent.
At nearly 16,000 euros at the time, it was clearly positioned in the yard of the great cruisers. Its legacy is that of a machine with character, which proved that a large Japanese twin could have as much soul and presence as a US production. It didn't seek to be the fastest or most agile, but to offer a unique sensory experience, centered on this charismatic engine. A colossal being with a beating heart, which marked its time.
