Overview
Do you remember that era, around 2008, when 125cc superbikes were the holy grail for young riders? Yamaha had already hit the mark with its XT 660, and the brand had the good idea of declining the recipe in a miniature version. That's how the Yamaha XT 125 X was born, a little beast that made more than one teenager drool with its big-bike look. The concept was clever: take the reliable base of the XT 125 R, the road crosser, and graft a superbike kit worthy of the name onto it.

We are talking about a real 124cc machine, a four-stroke single-cylinder engine that delivers 13 horsepower at 8000 rpm. Power is not its strong point, that's the least one can say, especially facing a competitor like the DT 125 X which could be pushed. But where the Yamaha XT 125 X 2008 scores points is on the scale. With barely 120 kg fully fueled, it is remarkably agile in the city. The simple cradle frame, generous suspension and 17-inch rims offer playful and reassuring handling for a beginner. Disc brakes, a 260 mm at the front, do their job well for this lightweight.
The real audience for this type of machine? Clearly the young license holder, or the urban dweller looking for a fun and economical toy. The 10-liter tank and the minimal fuel consumption make it an ally for daily commutes without breaking the bank. However, don't dream of long trips: the maximum speed is around 110 km/h, and the engine starts to suffer on the highway. It's a neighborhood bike, for outings with friends, for first attempts in curves without too much risk.
Today, finding a used Yamaha XT 125 X can be a reasonable crush. The 2007 to 2010 versions are solid, and their look inspired by the 660 doesn't age badly. You just need to check the condition of the chain and tires, often mistreated by young riders of the time. Compared to the WR 125 X, more radical and expensive, the XT plays the card of accessibility and style. Its new Yamaha XT 125 X price was around 3000 euros, a price justified by its complete equipment.
Ultimately, this little Yamaha did not revolutionize the 125cc world, but it offered a credible and stylish alternative between the road crosser and the sportbike. It taught many to play with mass transfers without fear of falling. It was not a lightning bolt, but it was an honest superbike, fun, and above all, it had attitude. For a first two-wheeled vehicle, we've known worse pedigrees.
