Overview
Do you remember the time when a supermotard meant a loud, large single-cylinder and a significant budget? Yamaha changed the game with the XT 660, and its strategy was to apply the same recipe, but smaller, to reach a different audience. The Yamaha XT 125 X, appearing around 2007-2009, is the result of this logic. It is not a creation ex nihilo, but rather the urban and stylized version of the XT 125 R trail bike, with 17-inch wheels, road tires, and a styling kit that gives it the look of its big sister. The result is a machine that, at first glance, seems designed for fun, but must contend with the strict limits of the A1 license.

Its 124 cm³ single-cylinder engine is a fuel-efficient four-stroke, delivering 13 horsepower at 8000 rpm and 11.7 Nm of torque from 2500 rpm. These figures, compliant with regulations, speak for themselves: this is a realm of accessibility, not brute performance. The five-speed gearbox is sufficient for city and secondary roads, but the top speed is around 110 km/h. It’s not a machine for overtaking on the highway, but for having fun with agility. The weight of 120 kg fully fueled is its real asset. This lightness, combined with a seat height of 860 mm, gives a motorcycle that is easy to tame, which responds instantly to the rider's inputs. The simple steel tubular frame and the suspension (175 mm of travel at the front, 190 mm at the rear) are designed to absorb road imperfections without any pretensions of competition.
Compared to other 125cc supermotards of the time from Yamaha, such as the DTX or the WR X, the XT 125 X occupies a particular niche. It is less radical and less “dirt” than the DTX, which could benefit from modifications, and less exclusive and sporty than the WR X, more oriented towards track riding. The XT 125 X, with its look inspired by the 660, plays the card of image and urban agility. Its disc brakes (260 mm at the front, 220 mm at the rear) are adequate for its weight, and the 10-liter tank offers a range compatible with its primary use: the city and short getaways. Its original price, around €2999, positioned it as a premium option in the 125cc category, where the competition often offered machines with less refined aesthetics.
Today, looking for a used Yamaha XT 125 X, especially a 2009 or 2010 model, can be a good idea for a young rider who wants to start with a motorcycle that has character, without the hassles of complex mechanics. It is ideal for learning in an urban environment, for short trips, and for developing your feel without being intimidated by a machine that is too powerful or too heavy. Its weaknesses are obvious: power limited by law, and a top speed that can be frustrating on open roads. But its qualities are those of a true supermotard: extreme maneuverability, a look that doesn't go unnoticed, and a simple and robust platform. It won’t appeal to the touring rider or track rider, but it remains, within its segment, a consistent choice for those who want a fun and stylish motorcycle as an entry into the world of two wheels.
