Overview
Who said the Japanese triple couldn't play in the premium thrill-machine league? With its 2023 MT-09 SP 900, Yamaha proves once again that the 889 cc CP3 remains one of the most entertaining engines on the market. Its 119 horsepower delivered at 10,000 rpm and, more importantly, its 93.2 Nm of torque available from just 7,000 rpm guarantee snappy acceleration every time you crack the throttle. All housed in an aluminum perimeter frame that keeps the wet weight down to 190 kg. On paper, the recipe is nothing revolutionary. In practice, it's the chassis that changes the game.

Because the real talking point of this SP version is the suspension. Previous generations of the MT-09 always suffered from running gear that sat one notch below the engine's potential. Yamaha knows it, and that's precisely why the SP variant exists — to correct that imbalance. The 41 mm KYB inverted fork features DLC-coated tubes, not just for the black-and-gold aesthetics, but to deliver smoother action. Adjustable in compression, rebound, and preload, it offers 130 mm of travel. At the rear, the switch to Öhlins transforms the bike's behavior. The fully adjustable mono-shock brings a precision the standard version simply cannot match. Preload is set via a remote adjuster, a practical detail that saves you from reaching for a wrench every time the load changes. Against a Triumph Street Triple RS or a Kawasaki Z900 SE, the Yamaha finally brings suspension that matches its temperament.
The visual presentation borrows from the R1M playbook. The swingarm ditches paint in favor of a brushed and anodized aluminum finish that looks superb. Smoked brake fluid reservoirs, double-stitched seat, blacked-out handlebar and levers, darkened fork tubes. The package exudes a cohesion that the base MT-09, rougher in its finish, simply doesn't have. It's a detail that matters when you're about to put 12,499 euros on the table. At that price — 1,500 euros more than the standard — the premium remains reasonable for anyone seeking a genuine improvement in road handling. What is the price of the 2023 Yamaha MT-09 SP 900 in France? It's precisely this entry point that makes it relevant against rivals that are often more expensive for comparable equipment.
On the electronics front, Yamaha hasn't held back. Color TFT display, IMU inertial platform, advanced traction control, slide control, wheelie control, engine brake management. The SP adds a cruise control adjustable in 2 km/h increments, useful on the highway even if the triple's character urges you to ride rather than sit behind a truck. For A2 license holders, good news — the MT-09 SP accepts a 35 kW restriction kit. Riders still progressing through their licensing can access this premium version before unleashing the full 119 horsepower once they obtain their unrestricted license. With a 14-liter tank and an average fuel consumption for the Yamaha MT-09 SP 900 hovering around 5.5 l/100 km in mixed riding, range remains a point to watch for high-mileage riders.
This MT-09 SP targets a specific audience. Riders who want the fierce character of the CP3 without accepting the standard version's chassis compromises. Riders who push hard on the road, who enjoy feeling the machine work beneath them, and who don't mind turning adjustment knobs. For pure urban use, the standard MT-09 will do the job. For those who string together winding back roads on weekends and want a machine that steps up when the pace rises, the SP justifies every euro of its premium.
