Overview
Four generations in, and the Iwata triple-cylinder still hasn't found a rival capable of challenging its title as the most playful mid-size roadster on the market. With this 2026 Yamaha MT-09 SP 900, the Japanese engineers have decided to widen the gap with the standard version even further, particularly where it matters most: the front end. The arrival of Brembo Stylema calipers, radially mounted on 298 mm discs, is a radical game-changer. We're talking about the best the Italian supplier offers for road use, just one notch below the Stylema R units found on machines like the Panigale V4 SP2. On a roadster priced at €12,699 in France, it's a spec sheet that speaks volumes about Yamaha's ambitions.

The 889 cc triple retains its 119 horsepower at 10,000 rpm and, more importantly, its 93.2 Nm of torque available from just 7,000 rpm, all wrapped in an aluminum perimeter frame that keeps the wet weight down to 194 kg. The power-to-weight ratio remains formidable against a Triumph Street Triple RS or an MV Agusta Brutale 800, its two most serious competitors. But it's in the onboard electronics that the SP truly takes flight. Where the base version offers three maps and two customizable modes, the SP adds four dedicated Track modes for circuit use. Traction control, two-level engine braking management, anti-wheelie, slide control, rear ABS deactivation: everything is configurable from the 5-inch TFT screen or via smartphone. For those who like to get a knee down from time to time, it's an arsenal worthy of a full-blooded sportbike.
On the suspension front, the compromise remains the same since the first SP: a 41 mm inverted KYB fork up front with 130 mm of travel, and an Öhlins rear shock. We would have liked to see Yamaha take the plunge with a full Öhlins setup, as Triumph offers on its Speed Triple RS. The manufacturer prefers to refine the details instead, with a DLC coating on the fork's inner tubes, firmer springs, and revised settings. The result is still convincing, especially for mixed road-and-track use, but regular track riders will probably end up investing in a higher-end fork. The seat perched at 825 mm and the committed riding position confirm that this bike isn't trying to win over Sunday cruisers.
This fourth generation also brings its share of welcome additions. The Smart Key system, a first on a Yamaha roadster, does away with the physical key in favor of automatic recognition. Height-adjustable handlebars and footpegs allow riders to tailor the ergonomics, a cruise control eases long motorway stints, and the bidirectional quickshifter moves to its third generation. The "Icon Performance" livery, inspired by the late R1-M, with its brushed aluminum swingarm, gives this MT-09 SP a presence the standard version simply doesn't have. Average fuel consumption on the Yamaha MT-09 SP 900 remains modest thanks to Euro 5+ compliance, an important point given the 14-liter tank that forces frequent stops for high-mileage riders.
So, who is this SP for? The rider who wants a roadster capable of doing it all at a high level of performance, from the daily commute to the occasional track day, without going down the supersport route. Against the competition, the Yamaha MT-09 SP 900's price remains competitive when you consider the level of equipment on board. The Yamaha triple retains the fiery character and the ease of handling that have built its reputation since 2014. There remains the front suspension question that prevents the SP from truly playing in the premium roadster league. A minor detail on the road, a lingering regret on the track.
