Overview
Who remembers the early MT-09s, those edgy roadsters whose triple-cylinder engine always seemed one step ahead of the chassis? Yamaha had dropped a fiery engine into suspensions that were too soft, and the result swung between raw thrills and cold sweats. The SP version was born from that realization, with a mission to tame the beast. In 2021, the move to 889 cc reignites the same challenge, but with upgraded credentials.

On paper, the 2021 Yamaha MT-09 SP 900 delivers 119 horsepower at 10,000 rpm and 93.2 Nm of torque at 7,000 rpm. All housed in an aluminum perimeter frame that keeps the wet weight down to 190 kg, including the 14-liter tank. It's light, it's nimble, and that's precisely where the suspension work makes all the difference. The 41 mm KYB inverted fork features DLC-coated tubes — that dark coating that reduces friction and improves sliding smoothness. Adjustable in compression, rebound, and preload, it offers genuine setup flexibility. But it's at the rear where the gap with the standard MT-09 widens the most: a fully adjustable Öhlins shock replaces the stock unit. Preload is set via a remote adjuster knob — a practical detail that saves you from pulling out a hook spanner on the roadside. Up against a Triumph Street Triple RS or a Kawasaki Z900 SE, this level of suspension spec puts the SP in a class of its own for the segment.
The visual presentation borrows from the R1-M. The swingarm displays its brushed and anodized aluminum without the slightest coat of paint. The smoked brake reservoirs, the double-stitched seat, the black handlebar and levers, the darkened fork tubes — every detail helps set this version apart from the base model. It's not merely cosmetic; it's a statement. Yamaha wants the SP to be perceived as a cut above, and visually, the mission is accomplished.
On the electronics side, the spec sheet impresses for a roadster at this price point. Color TFT display, IMU inertial platform, advanced traction control, slide control, wheelie control, and engine brake management. The SP adds a cruise control adjustable in 2 km/h increments. A sensible feature for long-distance rides, even if the machine's philosophy leans more toward wringing the throttle than settling into a cruising pace. With the Yamaha MT-09 SP 900's average fuel consumption kept in check thanks to well-calibrated injection, the bike remains practical for daily use despite its fierce temperament. Braking duties are handled by two 298 mm front discs with radial-mount four-piston calipers, rounding out a very solid dynamic package. The claimed top speed of 225 km/h confirms that the triple is far from short on breath.
Then there's the question of the Yamaha MT-09 SP 900's price: expect to pay 10,999 euros, a 1,500-euro premium over the standard version. The difference is justified by the Öhlins shock, DLC-coated fork, cruise control, and dedicated finishes. For a rider who regularly tackles twisty roads or simply wants a chassis that matches the engine, it's a worthwhile investment. For strictly urban use, the base MT-09 will get the job done. The SP is aimed at demanding riders — those who want to exploit every one of the triple's 119 horsepower without the running gear crying for mercy through fast corners. On that front, Yamaha has struck the right balance between performance, equipment, and pricing.
