Overview
What justifies dropping €12,699 on a 2025 Yamaha MT-09 SP 900 when the standard version already gets the job done? The question is worth asking, and the answer comes down to two words: chassis and braking. Yamaha has widened the gap between the two versions of its fourth-generation "Master of Torque," and this time the SP suffix no longer boils down to an Öhlins shock and a flattering paint job. The front end received particular attention with the arrival of radially mounted Brembo Stylema calipers on the twin 298 mm discs. We're talking about the best Brembo offers for road use, just one notch below the Stylema R or Hypure units reserved for superbikes. On a 194 kg wet-weight roadster, the bite is ferocious. The 41 mm inverted KYB fork, with its DLC-coated and gold-anodized tubes, slides with surgical precision. Yamaha still refuses to go full Öhlins, but the firmer springs and revised settings are enough to transform the dynamic behavior.

The 889 cc triple stays true to its reputation. Its 119 horsepower at 10,000 rpm and especially its 93.2 Nm of torque from just 7,000 rpm deliver the fierce, linear thrust that defines the MT family. The engine meets Euro 5+ without sacrificing character, with an 11.5:1 compression ratio and a short-stroke architecture (78 mm bore, 62.1 mm stroke) built for high revs. The third-generation bidirectional quickshifter handles upshifts and downshifts through the six-speed gearbox with a smoothness the competition—Triumph Street Triple RS chief among them—still struggles to match. In terms of average fuel consumption, the 2025 Yamaha MT-09 SP 900 remains reasonable for a triple of this displacement, provided you don't constantly rely on the most aggressive riding modes.
Because it's really the electronics that set this SP apart from the rest of the lineup. Where the standard offers three maps plus two customizable ones, the SP version adds four dedicated Track modes for circuit use. Traction control, anti-wheelie, two-level engine braking management, slide control, power modulation, and rear ABS deactivation: everything is configurable from the 5-inch TFT screen or via smartphone. The track display theme, exclusive to the SP, rounds out the package. What we have here is a roadster capable of giving a Ducati Monster SP a run for its money on track days, at a significantly lower price point.
Yamaha has also slipped in a few welcome refinements for this generation. The Smart Key system, a first on a roadster from the brand, does away with the physical key. The adjustable footpegs and handlebar height allow you to fine-tune the riding position, which is more committed than on the previous model, with an 825 mm seat height. The 14-liter tank demands regular stops on long trips, but nobody buys an MT-09 SP to cross France in one go. Cruise control, the Brembo radial master cylinder, and Bridgestone S23 tires complete a convincing standard equipment list. The "Icon Performance" livery, which borrows the cues of the late R1-M on the brushed aluminum swingarm, serves as a reminder that the SP badge carries a sporting heritage stretching back to the 1991 FZR 400 RR SP.
Who is this machine for? Riders who want a versatile roadster capable of shining on track without giving up everyday riding pleasure. Against the Triumph Street Triple 765 RS or the Kawasaki Z900 SE, the MT-09 SP plays the embedded electronics and premium braking card. The price of the 2025 Yamaha MT-09 SP 900 in France, at €12,699, places it roughly €2,000 above the standard version. A gap justified by the level of equipment, provided you actually make use of the track potential. Riders who stick exclusively to the road will find everything they need in the standard MT-09. The rest will know exactly why they're signing the check.
