Overview

The SP recipe is essential for certain Yamaha models. Especially the MT-10 and MT-09. It was the SP that reconciled sporty riding enthusiasts with the MT-09. With both versions coexisting perfectly within the range, the new generation logically proposes the same duo. But this time, the differences have been accentuated.

Especially on the front end. Yamaha has worked hard to ensure that this roadster awakens and maintains the fire within each of us – hence the appearance of Brembo Stylema brake calipers. Almost the best* available from the Italian supplier for a road bike, and much more capable of dominating the increased sportiness of the SP model.

Sport, spirited riding, knee scraping, or even some track days, the MT-09 900 SP is up for it. Enter the Riding Modes and you’ve immediately understood. The standard model has 3 pre-set Riding Modes (Sport – Street – Rain) plus 2 customisable ones. The SP adds 4 more under the Track label! Four ways to shake the engine on the track, with the parameterisation of the electronic brake control, engine braking management (2 levels), traction control, slide and wheelie controls, power mode, and the ability to deactivate rear ABS. All of this from a smartphone or on the dashboard.

Which consists of a 5-inch color TFT screen. The same as the MT-09, upgraded in this 4th generation. An exclusive “Track” display theme allows the display of track-specific information. The SP enriches its equipment with a Smart Key system. A first for a Yamaha roadster. No need to take the key out of your pocket. The bike recognizes its presence and a switch allows management of the ignition and locking / unlocking of the tank.

After that, we find the usual elements that add value to this bike. As at its debut, the “Icon Performance” color scheme reprises the livery of the R1-M. The swingarm retains its brushed aluminum finish while the suspension increases its level of efficiency. As on the previous MT-09 SP, the rear shock absorber is a fully adjustable Öhlins. The Kayaba fork receives gold anodizing and a DLC coating on its sliders to facilitate sliding. The manufacturer still doesn’t seem motivated to convert this 900 to full Öhlins. But already here, the fiery roadster shows a higher level of efficiency, with stiffer springs and optimized settings.

Let's not forget the small evolutions inherent to the 900 Master of Torque phase IV: adjustable footrests and a handlebar, a more engaged riding position, cruise control, the arrival of a Brembo radial brake master cylinder, acoustic amplifiers on the tank, a slightly revised design, Bridgestone S23 tires, a 3rd generation Up&Down shifter and an engine validated for Euro5+. Rest assured, there is no impact on its 119 horsepower which only asks to unleash the riding in all circumstances.

For most of us, the SP designation revives the memory of the superb YZF-R1 SP from 2006. The most curious will seek the origins of this label back to 1991, with the FZR 400 RR SP. Even today, it conveys a notion of superior performance that the MT-09 likes to take advantage of... and that of its virulent users.

* At Brembo, there's little better: the Stylema R or the Hypure. The kind of gear you find on crazy sportbikes like the Panigale V4 SP2. So a bit superfluous for a mid-size roadster.
