Overview

What do you slot between an MT-125 built for first thrills and an MT-07 that's become the absolute benchmark in its segment? Yamaha settled the question in 2016 with the MT-03 320, a compact roadster that fills a gap in the "Masters of Torque" lineup. The 300cc segment has never been the biggest seller in France, that's a fact. But it keeps growing year after year, driven by the Z 300, KTM 390 Duke, Benelli BN 302, and BMW G 310 R. Yamaha makes its move on this chessboard with a simple recipe: take the YZF-R3 sportbike, strip off the fairings, raise the handlebars, and wrap the whole thing in the aggressive styling of the MT family. The result has the merit of consistency.

Yamaha MT-03 320

Make no mistake, this Yamaha MT-03 320 has nothing to do with the old MT-03 powered by the XT-derived single, which appeared in the mid-2000s. Here, the "03" refers to the displacement, and the 320 suffix is there to clear up any confusion. Under the skin, you'll find the R3's technical platform carried over in its entirety. Diamond-type steel frame, 41 mm telescopic fork with 130 mm of travel, rear monoshock offering 125 mm, a 298 mm front disc gripped by a two-piston caliper, and a 220 mm rear disc. The 110/70-17 and 140/70-17 tires favor nimbleness over outright grip. Nothing revolutionary, but the package is sound and proven. A roadster born from a sportbike — that's a lineage you can trust.

The 321cc inline twin is the heart of the proposition. Four valves per cylinder, dual overhead cams, fuel injection, forged pistons, an oversquare bore and stroke of 68 x 44.1 mm, and a compression ratio of 11.2:1. This little twin delivers 42 horsepower at 10,750 rpm and 29.4 Nm of torque at 9,000 rpm. What is the top speed of the 2016 Yamaha MT-03 320? Expect around 160 km/h flat out, which is more than enough for daily commuting and weekend rides. These figures place it between the Kawasaki Z 300 and the KTM 390 Duke, and not that far off the Honda CB 500 F and its 48 horsepower. Except the Yamaha tips the scales at 169 kg wet, a good twenty kilos lighter than the Honda. Through a string of corners or in traffic, that advantage is immediately noticeable.

Yamaha MT-03 320

For A2 license holders, the MT-03 is an unrestricted entry point. No restrictor kit needed, as the power output stays below the regulatory threshold. ABS comes standard, the seat height of 780 mm remains approachable, and the 14-liter tank provides a reasonable range. The dashboard, carried over from the R3, adds a welcome sporty touch. Against the 390 Duke, the Yamaha carries a relative weight penalty, as the KTM plays in a different league when it comes to raw agility. But the Japanese machine makes up for it with a smoother twin and more versatile ergonomics.

The real sticking point lies on the price list. Listed at 4,799 euros in 2016, the MT-03 320 finds itself dangerously close to more generous displacements. What is the price of a 2019 Yamaha MT-03 320 in France, or the 2024 version? Prices have climbed with successive updates, but the underlying issue remains the same. Add 1,500 euros and you step up to the MT-07, which offers a price-to-fun-to-performance ratio that's hard to argue with and far stronger resale value. That's the paradox of this segment: the MT-03 is an honest, well-built motorcycle that's enjoyable to ride daily, but it operates in a narrow corridor where every euro counts. For a new rider who wants something serious without breaking the bank, it remains a smart choice. As long as you don't glance at the next line up in the catalog.
