Overview
Why did Yamaha pull its MT-03 from the catalogs for a full year? Not for a cosmetic overhaul or a mechanical facelift. Simply to comply with Euro4 regulations. The feisty little roadster sat out the 2017 model year, taking the time to get up to code, before reappearing in 2018 with no major upheaval. A standards update, a few fresh color options, and that was that. Be careful, though, not to confuse this Yamaha MT-03 320 with its mid-2000s namesake, the single-cylinder derived from the XT with a supermotard twist. We're talking about an entirely different machine here, born in the wake of the YZF-R3 sportbike.

And that's precisely where Yamaha's stroke of genius lies: take the technical foundation of the R3, strip off the fairings, raise the handlebars, and bolt on the menacing face of the MT family. The tubular steel diamond-type frame, the 298 mm front disc clamped by a two-piston caliper, the 41 mm telescopic fork, the 110/70 and 140/70 tires — all of it comes straight from the sportbike. A roadster that shares its underpinnings with a track-ready machine gives it a sharper edge than most in its segment. The upright riding position delivers superior everyday comfort, while the chassis retains a precision that novice riders will appreciate when the urge to pick up the pace kicks in.
Beneath the 14-liter fuel tank beats a 321 cc inline twin, fuel-injected and fitted with four valves per cylinder. The oversquare bore and stroke dimensions (68 x 44.1 mm) favor high-revving performance, and it's at 10,750 rpm that all 42 horsepower are unleashed. Torque, at 29.4 Nm at 9,000 rpm, remains modest on paper but proves sufficient to hustle the bike's 169 kg wet weight along. These figures place the Yamaha MT-03 320 between the now-defunct Kawasaki Z300 and the KTM 390 Duke. More interesting still, the gap with the Honda CB500F is only six horsepower, yet the Yamaha tips the scales 24 kg lighter. On the road, that weight differential matters. What is the top speed of the Yamaha MT-03 320? The speedometer flatlines at around 160 km/h, an honest figure for this displacement.

The A2 license category is clearly the intended playground. With its 42 horsepower, the MT-03 slides under the regulatory threshold without requiring any restrictor kit. Standard ABS provides reassurance, the 780 mm seat height remains accessible to most body types, and the instrument cluster borrowed from the R3 adds a welcome sporty touch. The six-speed gearbox does its job without any particular flair, and the chain final drive is conventional and predictable. For beginners looking to experience the thrills of a mid-displacement machine without breaking the bank, the deal is sealed. That said, the Yamaha MT-03 320's price tag of €5,299 in 2018 raises a positioning question. Add €1,500 and you gain access to the MT-07, a far more generous machine in terms of torque, versatility, and resale value.
It's the recurring dilemma of this segment: these small-displacement bikes look appealing on paper but struggle to justify their price against formidably competitive bigger siblings. The MT-03 is no exception to the rule. It nonetheless remains a sound choice for anyone seeking a lightweight, easy-to-handle machine with genuine sporting character inherited from the R3. Finally, it's worth noting that Yamaha issued several recalls on this model between 2018 and 2019, involving radiator hoses, the gear selector spring, and the front brake lever. Teething troubles, corrected free of charge at dealerships, that are well worth checking when shopping on the used market.
