Overview

Who remembers the first Yamaha MT-03 320, the one playing the well-behaved extra in a family of brutes? Next to the scarred faces of the MT-09 and MT-10, the little 300 almost looked out of place with its overly polished appearance. Yamaha clearly took note, and this 2020 model year arrives with an entirely different attitude.

Yamaha MT-03 320

The design is sharp. The front end toughens up, the gaze narrows, and the Yamaha MT-03 320 now borrows the styling cues of its bigger sisters. The lateral scoops echo those of the MT-09, the digital dashboard draws directly from the MT-10, and the slimmed-down LED indicators modernize the silhouette. You can feel the intent to inject character into what had been, until now, a somewhat bland learner roadster. The result works, even if the slightly protruding central headlight and the still-exposed horn do take a little away from the overall effect. Minor details, granted, but on a machine this compact, everything shows.

On the chassis side, the real progress lies up front. The conventional fork gives way to a 37 mm inverted fork, a choice that changes the game in terms of rigidity and steering precision. The diamond-type steel frame stays true to form, and the rear monoshock gains firmness with revised settings. The braking, however, remains unchanged: a 298 mm front disc with a two-piston caliper, a 220 mm rear disc. It's adequate for a machine weighing 169 kg wet, without being spectacular. ABS keeps things in check, and the 110/70-17 and 140/70-17 tyres stay within segment norms.

Yamaha MT-03 320

The 321 cc inline twin produces 42 horsepower at 10,750 rpm and 29.4 Nm of torque at 9,000 rpm, all channelled through a six-speed gearbox and chain drive. Honest figures that place the MT-03 in the same waters as the KTM 390 Duke and the Kawasaki Z400, two rivals slightly better endowed in displacement and torque. Top speed caps out at 160 km/h, which is more than enough for daily use. The engine doesn't try to impress with raw aggression — it banks instead on a reassuring progressiveness, ideal for A2 licence holders looking to build confidence without getting caught off guard.

With a listed price of €5,499, the Yamaha MT-03 320 positions itself as a credible entry ticket into the roadster world. It doesn't claim to rival the middleweights, but it no longer has anything to be embarrassed about in a parking lot next to its direct competitors. This 2020 evolution finally gives it the visual character and chassis seriousness it was missing. For a new licence holder or an urban rider seeking a light, nimble machine with enough style not to grow tired of it after six months, it ticks the right boxes. That said, Yamaha could have taken advantage of this redesign to beef up the torque — the only real weak point against a Duke that bites harder from the mid-range.
