Overview
What drove Yamaha to pull a motorcycle from the catalog for nearly two years only to bring it back virtually unchanged? The Euro4 standard, plain and simple. The Yamaha MT-03 320 sat out the 2017-2018 model years while its twin-cylinder was brought into compliance, before returning in 2019 without shaking up the recipe. The engine was recalibrated on the emissions side, but the rest of the package didn't budge a millimeter. Those hoping for a thorough overhaul can shelve their expectations. Those who already loved the machine will find their bearings with their eyes closed.

The secret behind this MT-03 is its direct bloodline to the YZF-R3. Yamaha took its small sportbike, stripped off the full fairing, raised the handlebars, and grafted on the aggressive face that defines the MT family. The diamond steel frame is the same, as is the 41 mm telehydraulic fork, along with the 298 mm front disc squeezed by a two-piston caliper and the 220 mm rear disc. The 110/70-17 and 140/70-17 tires favor nimbleness over outright grip. The result: a roadster that carries the temperament of a sportbike in its DNA, with a riding position far more welcoming for daily use. Hard not to find that appealing on paper.
On the engine side, the small 321 cc twin with four valves per cylinder and dual overhead cams delivers 42 horsepower at 10,750 rpm, paired with 29.4 Nm of torque at 9,000 rpm. It's no powerhouse, but it's lively enough to have fun on the road. The Yamaha MT-03 320's top speed caps out around 160 km/h, placing it between the defunct Kawasaki Z300 and the KTM 390 Duke. Against the Honda CB500F and its 48 horsepower, the gap looks modest on the spec sheet, but the Yamaha's 169 kg wet weight partly makes up for it. Twenty kilos less than a CB500 is genuinely noticeable through sequences of corners and when getting back on the throttle out of roundabouts. The six-speed gearbox does its job without any particular brilliance, and the chain drive remains standard fare for the segment.

The Yamaha MT-03 320 is naturally aimed at A2 license holders, since its 42 horsepower falls under the 47.5 hp threshold without any restriction. The 780 mm seat height reassures average-sized riders, standard ABS provides a welcome safety net, and the dashboard inherited from the R3 adds a touch of character. At a price of €5,299 in 2019 in France, it sits competitively against the competition. But that's precisely where the shoe pinches. The KTM 390 Duke, lighter and more powerful, plays in the same price bracket with a decidedly spicier temperament. And above all, for roughly €1,500 more, the MT-07 offers a leap in performance and riding enjoyment that's hard to ignore, with considerably stronger resale value. The Yamaha MT-03 320's price therefore remains its main selling point, but also its glass ceiling.
One point to watch for used buyers: Yamaha launched several recall campaigns between late 2018 and May 2019, covering radiator hoses, the shift return spring, and the front brake lever. Nothing dramatic in itself, but it's worth checking that these interventions were carried out before signing on the dotted line. The MT-03 320 is an honest machine, well-born thanks to its R3 foundation, accessible and free of unpleasant surprises. It won't revolutionize the small roadster segment, but it holds its own with Yamaha reliability and a riding experience that will appeal to beginner riders or those looking for a lightweight machine for city riding and weekend jaunts.
