Overview
When Yamaha decided to give its little Yamaha MT-03 320 a facelift for the 2022 model year, the message was clear: no more playing the quiet kid at the back of the class. The first generation, honest and well-mannered, suffered from an inferiority complex next to its bigger sisters. The MT-09 played the musclebound bully, the MT-10 terrorized rearview mirrors, and the 03 just sat there, discreet, almost shy. Those days are over. The new version adopts a sharp front end, a predatory gaze that finally gives it a credible family resemblance. You can tell the designers wanted to graft the visual character of the higher-end models onto it, with those muscular air scoops and the LCD dashboard inspired by the MT-10. The result works. This little bike has serious presence.

Under the bodywork, the fundamentals remain solid without pretending to play in the big leagues. The diamond-type steel frame carries over, proven and rigid enough for its intended use. The real chassis news is the 37 mm inverted fork replacing the old conventional unit. A change that transforms the front end: steering gains precision, and turn-in becomes more decisive. The rear shock has also been revised with firmer settings. For braking, we stay with a simple setup featuring a 298 mm front disc and a 220 mm rear disc, all overseen by ABS. Nothing spectacular, but it gets the job done. The 780 mm seat height lets most riders plant their feet without stress, and the 168 kg wet weight is forgotten within the first few meters.
The 321 cc inline twin passes Euro5 without losing any feathers. The 42 horsepower at 10,750 rpm and 29.4 Nm of torque at 9,000 rpm haven't changed. This engine needs revs to come alive — that's its nature. Don't expect fiery drive out of slow corners. Against the KTM 390 Duke and its 44 horsepower, or even the BMW G 310 R, the Yamaha falls slightly behind on paper, especially in low-rpm torque. But the six-speed gearbox is smooth and well-spaced, and the chain drive remains a fuss-free classic. Top speed plateaus around 160 km/h, which is more than enough for its intended purpose. With a 14-liter tank, range allows for proper rides without calculating every stop.

It's in the realm of style and positioning that this 2022 MT-03 scores points. The slim LED turn signals, the clean digital instrument cluster, the taut lines — everything converges to give the machine a presence its predecessor never had. At a price of 5,999 euros, it sits at the upper end of the A2 segment, but the build quality justifies the premium. Those wondering what a Yamaha MT-03 320 costs on the French market will find prices varying by year, with used models from 2016 or 2019 trading well below that figure.
The 2022 Yamaha MT-03 320 doesn't reinvent anything. It doesn't need to. Its role is to welcome A2 license holders onto a machine that doesn't feel like a riding-school bike, while offering a sound chassis and an engine that's usable in daily riding. It fills that role with confidence, adding a dose of visual character that was sorely missing. It's not the most powerful or the most sophisticated in its class, but it's the one that best plays the presence-to-price ratio card. And in a segment where image counts almost as much as the spec sheet, that's a compelling argument.
