Overview
How can you resist the call of a V-twin that purrs at idle and roars as soon as you twist the throttle? In 2005, the Suzuki SV 650 N didn’t revolutionize its formula, but it refined its appearance to appeal to a new generation of riders. With its aluminum trellis frame now finished in matte black and its small integrated windscreen, it displays a more modern, sharper look, far from the organic curves of the first SV 650 N models of 1999 or 2000. But beneath this veneer, the same heart still beats: a 645 cm3 V2 delivering 74 horsepower at 9000 rpm and, above all, a charming torque of 62.8 Nm available from mid-range. That's where its genius lies: it doesn't overwhelm you with excessive firepower; it seduces you with smooth, constant traction, a drivability that inspires immediate confidence, whether you're a novice or an experienced road warrior.

Compared to a more recent Yamaha MT-07 of the time, the 2005 SV 650 N may seem less eager, less raw. Its 41 mm fork and single shock absorber, although revised, retain a somewhat too-soft character for demanding sporty use. On our rutted roads, the front end tends to become bouncy, betraying a lack of stiffness and fine adjustment. The braking, with its two 290 mm front discs, remains honest and progressive, even if the rear sometimes lacks bite. But let's admit it, you don't get on an SV to wage war on the stopwatch. You saddle up for the simple, direct pleasure of mechanics. Its contained weight, 183 kg fully fueled, and its 800 mm seat height make it a maneuverable roadster, a true urban Swiss Army knife that transforms into a partner for winding weekend rides.
The main drawback of this 2005 generation, and it’s a classic on SV 650 N models since the 2003 redesign, lies in its comfort compromise. The seat, thin, quickly reminds you of the rules after an hour in the saddle, and the slightly more engaged riding position becomes fatiguing over time. As for the pillion, it's more of a formality than a real passenger seat, a simple slice of toast that condemns any idea of two-up travel. It’s a selfish motorcycle, designed for the solitary pleasure of the rider. Its injection, compared to the carburetors of earlier models like the SV 650 N 2001 or 2002, provides exemplary smoothness at low rpm and controlled consumption, with its 17-liter fuel tank.
Today, searching for a used Suzuki SV 650 N, whether it's a 2005, 2006, or even a more recent 2018 model, is searching for the pure essence of the roadster. It’s a machine without frills or pretension, which puts raw sensations to the forefront. It will never be the fastest, the most comfortable, or the most sophisticated. But once the ignition is turned and its characteristic V2 is put into vibration, all its technical weaknesses disappear. It offers you something hard to find on many modern motorcycles: pure character. For those who want an accessible first large displacement motorcycle, a reliable and playful second bike, or simply the authenticity of a twin with a soul, the technical specifications of the Suzuki SV 650 N remain a must-read.
