Overview

Is this a joke or a marketing stroke of genius? That's the question that comes to mind when stripping away the MotoGP livery of this limited-edition GSX-S 750. Suzuki had the daring idea of dressing its accessible roadster in a paint scheme inspired by the ferocious GSX-RR that races in the world championship. Except here, under the aggressive fairing, beats a heart restricted to 47 horsepower, a version specially designed for the A2 license. The irony is delicious: sporting the colors of a 300-horsepower machine on a motorcycle that stops breathing at 7000 rpm. It's a bit like offering a Formula 1 driver's suit to a novice city car driver. Yet, the gesture is not devoid of meaning.

Suzuki GSX-S 750 MotoGP

Because this edition doesn't just consist of stickers. Suzuki adds seriousness to the package with a carbon Akrapovic exhaust, a beautiful element that lightens the beast by two kilos and gives a much more fleshy voice to the inline four-cylinder engine. A perimeter frame in ariel, radial brakes, and an inverted 41 mm fork complete a serious chassis, ready to handle much more power. Just so, that's where the machine's interest lies: its 749 cm³ engine, from the previous GSX-R, is a solid and supple block, delivering a torque of 63.7 Nm from 4000 rpm. Once the two years of probationary license have passed, a simple official derestriction allows the release of the original 95 horsepower. It then becomes a real road beast, much more relevant in its restricted configuration.

But let's talk money. The price of a Suzuki GSX-S 750 MotoGP 2019? It hovers around 9499 euros for the base version, potentially rising to 9799 euros depending on the decoration options, including a kit of stickers to apply yourself. For this budget, we are clearly in the high-end of the A2 roadsters. The competition, such as the Yamaha MT-07 or the Kawasaki Z650, offers machines that are often less expensive and lighter. The weight of 213 kg fully fueled is felt, especially for a young license audience. However, the argument of future transformation and the quality of the components, such as the standard Akrapovic, partly justify the bill.

So, who is it for? Certainly not the pure track rider, nor even the touring rider seeking comfort. Its low handlebars, 820 mm seat, and 16-liter tank are intended for sporty and urban use. It targets the demanding young license holder, the one who wants a motorcycle with a world championship look and sees beyond his two years of restriction. An audience ready to invest nearly 9500 euros in a machine that he will first have to tame in its restricted version.

Ultimately, this GSX-S 750 MotoGP is an ambiguous object. Brilliant commercial idea that rides on the glory of competition, it offers quality hardware and obvious potential. But it requires its buyer a certain patience, having to initially compose with artificially stifled power. It is a promise for the future, wrapped in a somewhat too wise present.
