Overview
Almost 10 years that the GSX-R125 has brought sport to the hands of "small" license holders. Suzuki is securing its future by keeping it in the catalog with E5+ validation and an announced price reduction. Spring will tell us more.
15 horsepower and a small displacement but a mythical name. This motorcycle sees in its rearview mirror an exceptional heritage. The GSX-R lineage has experienced everything in terms of circuit racing, won everything, endured everything. From the most beautiful victories to the bitter disappointments, through unacknowledged speeds or moments of doubt, the 'Gex' has crossed the years until its name became almost mythical. After exploring numerous displacements, from 50 cm3 to the 1340 Hayabusa, and especially in 750 cm3, Suzuki declines it in a 125 cm3 configuration. Finally, a small sportbike for young riders bearing the famous red R.
The GSX-R 125, it had been quite a few years that we heard its shadow in the corridor of rumors. Echoes were escaping but the manufacturer said nothing. Until the machine showed itself officially, surprising observers and immediately positioning itself as a machine to be reckoned with. This arrival must be done by imposing respect from the start. Suzuki announces that its small GSX-R will be equipped with an excellent power-to-weight ratio. Its silhouette leads one to believe it without hesitation: with its feline look, its design subtly echoing the GSX-R codes, its questioning face, the youngest of the gex can proudly pose next to its older sisters.
Sporty, certainly, but not as much as some more virulent productions. For example, there is no inverted fork or radial caliper like on the Aprilia RS 125. Here, a classic fork, an axial caliper and a brake disc per wheel. With ABS as standard. Enough to contain the power of the engine without worry. Suzuki did not go for ostentation but for efficiency. A classic and modern 4-stroke single cylinder, with 4 valves, injection, double ACT and liquid cooling will take care of the overall speed. In view of the legislation, 15 horsepower gallop at the exit of 10,500 rpm. To make the difference, Suzuki announces that its 125 is equipped with the smallest frontal area in the category, and that the fairing parts are lighter than those used by the competition. Enough to offer better acceleration and a reduction in consumption.
Besides its incisive and engaging line, the 125 GSX-R seeks to distinguish itself through various elements. Examining it in detail, we discover that its brake discs are petal-shaped, that the exhaust breathes through two outlets at the mouth, that the lights are LED, that the fully digital instrumentation reprises (in simplified form) the style of the latest 1000 and, surprising refinement, that the bike starts without a key. Well yes, there is a key. But with contactless technology, like on much higher-end motorcycles. Just have it in your pocket, turn the switch and a simple thumb press on the right is enough to show off the single. With the Suzuki Easy Start System, the starter remains engaged until the engine starts.
Alongside the R 125, Ninja 125, Aprilia RS 125 and KTM RC 125, the category will have to count on this player, adorned with a prestigious name.
