Overview

When Suzuki decided to release a SE version of its GSR 750 for the 2014 model year, the question naturally arose: simple paint job or genuine added value? The answer can be summed up in a few words. The 749 cc inline four-cylinder, directly inherited from the GSX-R 750, retains its 106 horsepower at 10,000 rpm and 79.4 Nm of torque at 9,000 rpm. Not a single engine setting was changed. Not a single chassis component was altered. The 2014 Suzuki GSR 750 SE plays the style card, and that card alone. The question is whether it's worth it.

Suzuki GSR 750 SE

On paper, this special edition stands out with a blue and white livery immediately reminiscent of the Hamamatsu firm's sportbikes. The 43 mm inverted fork is dressed in gold anodizing, the adjusters turn red, the shock spring follows the same color scheme, and the drive chain sports a rather flattering blue. The handlebar switches to matte anthracite grey. The visual effect is a success, you have to admit. The roadster gains presence and sets itself apart from the standard model with a certain aesthetic coherence. But beneath this refined dress, the steel perimeter frame, the front braking system with dual 310 mm discs and two-piston calipers, and the rear monoshock remain strictly identical.

What makes this version interesting is above all its price positioning. At 7,199 euros, the GSR 750 SE was encroaching on machines from a category below, notably the Honda CB600F Hornet, which then reigned over the mid-size roadster segment. Except the GSR offers an extra 150 cc and a good twenty additional horsepower for a comparable price. At 211 kg wet, with a seat height of 815 mm and a 17.5-liter tank providing decent range, the machine aims to be versatile. It suits the daily commuter just as well as the rider who likes to pick up the pace on back roads at the weekend.

The four-valve-per-cylinder engine, with its 72 mm bore, short 46 mm stroke, and 12.3:1 compression ratio, loves to rev. It's a motor that wakes up in the upper reaches of the tachometer and pulls hard all the way to a claimed top speed of 220 km/h. The six-speed gearbox gets the job done without any particular brilliance. The 120/70-17 front and 180/55-17 rear tires offer a good compromise between grip and longevity. What do owners think of the 2014 Suzuki GSR 750 SE? Most praise the price-to-fun ratio and the reliability of the GSX-R engine, while regretting braking that falls a bit short for a machine of this temperament. The two-piston calipers lack bite compared to what some competitors like the Kawasaki Z800 or Yamaha FZ8 were already offering.

Limited to just over 600 units on the French market, the GSR 750 SE remains an honest proposition for anyone seeking a punchy roadster without breaking the bank. It revolutionizes nothing compared to the base model, and purists will see it as an unabashedly cosmetic exercise. But the competitive price, expressive engine, and aggressive face are enough to justify the interest. Reviews of the 2015 Suzuki GSR 750 SE confirm this trend: the model ages well and holds a stable value on the used market. As a first big-bore bike or a daily ride with character, it ticks many boxes without claiming to tick them all.
