Overview
Who still remembers that the 750cc sportbike category once thrilled entire generations of riders? In 2014, Suzuki attempts to rekindle the flame with this GSX-R 750 SE, a special edition limited to 25 units for the French market. A fresh coat of paint on proven mechanicals, or a genuine gift for discerning collectors?

The foundation is one we know inside out. The 750cc inline four-cylinder produces 148 horsepower at 13,200 rpm with 86.3 Nm of torque peaking at 11,200 rpm. Figures that place the Suzuki at the top of the heap against a competition that, it must be said, has largely abandoned this segment. The Kawasaki ZX-6R plays in a smaller displacement class, as does the Honda CBR600RR. Only the MV Agusta F3 800 comes close to challenging the seven-fifty on prestige grounds, but at a considerably steeper price. With its 190 kg wet weight and aluminum twin-spar perimeter frame, the GSX-R maintains a power-to-weight ratio that would put many modern sportbikes to shame. The claimed top speed of 270 km/h confirms that the potential remains fully intact.
What sets this SE apart from a standard GSX-R is above all the cosmetic treatment. The red and black livery comes straight from the Hamamatsu factory, not from some last-minute customization shop. The wheels feature red pinstripes, the Brembo monoblock calipers sport matching lettering, the fork tube caps are anodized red while the steering nut, chain adjuster, and fork legs adopt a coppery gold finish. A red seat completes the picture. Subtle without being ostentatious. For this wardrobe upgrade, Suzuki charges a premium over the standard model, bringing the total to 12,799 euros. That's the price of exclusivity, even though mechanically nothing changes beneath the fairings.
On the equipment front, the GSX-R 750 stays true to its minimalist philosophy. No traction control, no sophisticated riding modes. The electronics boil down to an electronically controlled steering damper, the S-DMS system offering two fuel injection maps, and a slipper clutch. The chassis relies on a 43 mm inverted fork and a rear monoshock providing 120 and 130 mm of travel respectively. Braking duties are handled by Brembo with two radially mounted 310 mm discs and four-piston calipers that inspire confidence. The 120/70-17 front and 180/55-17 rear tires remain standard fare for the segment. The seat height of 810 mm and the 17-liter fuel tank allow for more than just track-day outings, even though the riding position leaves no doubt about the machine's true intentions.
This special edition targets a very specific audience. Die-hard fans of the GSX-R lineage, those who consider the 750 the perfect middle ground between the edginess of a 600 and the brutality of a 1000. Nostalgics from an era when the supersport segment was the stuff of dreams in high school courtyards. With only 25 units available in France, the SE clearly plays the rarity card. On the dynamic front, nothing new under the sun, but the recipe remains delicious. A precise chassis, an engine that comes alive in the upper revs, a bike that demands rider commitment without punishing the slightest mistake. In a market where pure sportbikes are losing ground to naked bikes and adventure machines, this GSX-R 750 SE reads like a love letter to a bygone era. Whether 12,799 euros for paint and anodization is enough to justify the detour remains to be seen.
