Overview

The F3 800 R arrived in 2023 to replace the Rosso. A new model? An evolution? A sportier model? No, no, just a name change; for a motorcycle that is still as attractive. A small clarification: the manufacturer didn't play around by removing 4 letters for fun. The main work was done on the braking system. Now, Brembo Stylema calipers ensure deceleration. Given the quality of the components, the F3 will brake late. Also, an upgrade makes the electronic throttle and cruise control more intuitive, the front headlight is redesigned, the mirrors are retouched, and the rear turn signals switch to LEDs.

At MV, the 800 F3 is the only sport motorcycle ready for combat in the MV-Agusta lineup – the Superveloce plays in an almost as sporty but less radical and more neo-retro glamorous register. This one reveals a more "accessible" identity with the R designation. This is how the firm names its entry-level models in each family. To offer a more contained price and the essentials of the motorcycle. Less decoration but no less potential.

The R models all have the same approach: a large red, very vibrant, on a completely black body. We are no longer in the traditional gray / orange red synonymous with the brand. This very marked color scheme doesn’t tend to duplicate the dominance of Ducati, but rather that of Ferrari. It pulsates in the eyes like blood in the arteries. Nothing to fear for the sculptural lines of the F3. More than 10 years after its birth (in 675), the F3 is still as delightful to look at.

Over the years, it has evolved in line with electronics and dictates. The latest is Euro5, which it complies with at the cost of a few modifications. Technicians also took the opportunity to improve some parts. The 798 cm3 three-cylinder engine has lost a small horsepower for E5, now delivering 147 horsepower at 13,000 rpm. The maximum torque hasn’t changed but is delivered a little earlier. The (almost) 9 mkg peak is reached with 500 rpm advance, at 10100 rpm.

The modifications are common to other motorcycles equipped with the Trepistone. The factory applied a DLC coating to the valves, changed the main bearings, connecting rods, and drive shaft to reduce friction, replaced the injectors for more powerful models, updated the ECU, installed a 5% more efficient radiator, and reinforced the clutch. The exhaust line is completely redesigned to make the exhaust gases cleaner and better fill the power curves. Its design gains aggressiveness, with the 3 exhaust pipes becoming beveled silex.

An MV is also a sport-tempered chassis. Which evolves in small touches. We keep the multi-adjustable inverted fork, the monobrach and the steel trellis frame. However, we will revise the lateral plates in aluminum to make them more rigid.

The electronics are also upgraded. There is now a cruise control; but who will use it?! We will use the 3rd generation Up&Down shifter much more. A new sensor makes it more pleasant and more precise. The F3 has finally changed its LCD dashboard for the color TFT panel that invades all models from Varese. A beautiful 5.5-inch combination, capable of communicating with the MV Ride house app. This allows you to parameterize driving aids from your smartphone, install navigation thanks to a mirror function, record and share your outings...

Let’s get serious. We’re not on an MV F3 to chat on social networks; we’re on it to ride. Throttle, good tires, watts, and we’re in. The electronics are there behind with the installation of an inertial unit to improve efficiency thanks to positioning calculations in relative space. ABS becomes Cornering (now supplied by Continental), traction control is more precise, anti-wheeling evolves into a wheelie control, and all this stuff is supervised by 4 Riding Modes. Don’t forget Launch Control, the Mobisat tracker, and the price.

An MV-Agusta is expensive. Or very expensive, your choice. But in the R definition, it hits a little less. This blood-red F3800 demands a few euros less than the previous version.
