Overview
Who can still afford the luxury of riding Italian without mortgaging their house? MV Agusta attempts an answer with the Rosso range, a more accessible version of its flagship models. The MV Agusta F3 800 Rosso takes the Varese supersport recipe and swaps the flattering liveries for a blood-red scheme on a full black backdrop. The visual result remains striking. Ten years after the F3 debuted in 675 form, this Italian machine's sculpted lines haven't aged a day. Up against a Ducati Panigale V2 or a Yamaha R6 nearing the end of its run, the F3 retains a graphic personality that nobody disputes. And at €16,400—a good thousand less than the previous version—it becomes almost reasonable for an MV.

Beneath the fairings, the 798 cc triple has undergone a Euro 5 compliance overhaul. One horsepower sacrificed on the altar of regulations, still leaving 147 hp at 13,000 rpm. Torque of 88 Nm now peaks at 10,100 rpm, 500 revs earlier than before. On paper, the loss is negligible. In practice, the engineers' deep rework more than compensates. DLC coating on the valves, new bearings, lighter connecting rods, higher-performance injectors, a radiator 5% more efficient, and a reinforced clutch. The exhaust system, completely redesigned with its three bevel-cut outlets, contributes as much to the acoustic character as it does to filling the power curves. This triple remains a mechanical gem, ferocious in the upper rev range and blessed with a sound that neither a Japanese inline-four nor a Bolognese twin can replicate.
The chassis makes no concessions to comfort. A tubular steel trellis frame paired with stiffened aluminium side plates, a 43 mm fully adjustable inverted fork, a single-sided swingarm, and Brembo four-piston calipers on 320 mm discs. At 173 kg dry and with a seat height of 830 mm, this MV Agusta F3 800 Rosso review confirms the machine is aimed at riders who know what they're doing. Smaller frames will appreciate the compactness; taller riders will have to deal with wasp-like ergonomics. The 16.5-litre tank demands frequent stops if you ride hard, but nobody buys an F3 to cross France in one go.

On the electronics front, MV Agusta has updated things with real commitment. An inertial measurement unit, Continental-supplied cornering ABS, refined traction control, wheelie management, four riding modes, and launch control. The third-generation bi-directional quickshifter gains precision thanks to a new sensor. The old LCD screen gives way to a 5.5-inch colour TFT display, compatible with the MV Ride app for adjusting rider aids and navigation. A cruise control also makes an appearance, even if it's hard to imagine who would restrain this machine on the motorway.

The MV Agusta F3 800 Rosso plays a specific role in the Varese lineup. It opens the club doors to enthusiasts who want an authentic Italian sportbike without tipping into the stratospheric pricing of the high-end versions. Against the competition, it counters with a unique character, a playful triple, and lines as sharp as ever. Its limitations are well known. A sparse dealer network, reliability that demands diligent maintenance, and virtually no comfort on long journeys. But those looking for a sensible motorcycle don't shop in Varese. They buy Japanese. The F3 Rosso is for those who want to feel something. And on that front, it does not disappoint.
