Overview
Who can still claim that a mid-displacement Italian sportbike has no place against the overpowered Japanese machines? The MV Agusta F3 800 Rosso, 2022 vintage, answers that question with 147 horsepower extracted from a 798 cc triple, all wrapped in a blood-red livery over a fully black backdrop. No chrome flourishes or sophisticated color schemes: the Rosso principle at MV is to offer the mechanical and dynamic heart of the machine without the trimmings of the premium versions. The price tag of 16,200 euros remains steep, admittedly, but it positions this F3 below the more lavishly appointed variants. Against a Ducati Panigale V2 or a Yamaha R7, the positioning is clear: the target is the rider who wants Italian exclusivity without mortgaging the garage.

On the engine side, the famous Trepistone has been reworked to meet Euro5 standards. It loses one horsepower in the process, but the engineers in Varese compensated with extensive work on the internals: DLC-coated valves, new bearings, lighter connecting rods, revised injectors, and a remapped ECU. Peak torque of 88.1 Nm now arrives at 10,100 rpm, 500 rpm earlier than before. In practice, this translates into sharper drive out of corners, a precious asset on track. The exhaust system has been entirely redesigned, with roughly hewn outlet shapes that lend a more aggressive visual character. The 13.3:1 compression ratio confirms that this triple is dead serious when you crack the throttle open.
The chassis retains the fundamentals that built the brand's reputation: a tubular steel trellis frame connected to aluminum side plates, the latter having gained rigidity on this version. The 43 mm inverted fork offers 125 mm of travel, while the rear monoshock provides 130 mm. At the controls, four-piston Brembo calipers bite 320 mm discs. At 173 kg dry and with a seat perched at 830 mm, the MV Agusta F3 800 Rosso is aimed at riders who accept uncompromising sport ergonomics. The 16.5-liter tank allows decent range for track sessions or mountain rides, provided you don't wring the throttle too hard.

The electronics take an interesting step forward on this model year. The addition of an inertial measurement unit enables Continental-branded cornering ABS, finer traction control, and a wheelie control system that manages wheelies rather than simply preventing them. Four riding modes oversee the package, supplemented by Launch Control for standing starts. The third-generation bidirectional quickshifter, fitted with a new sensor, smooths out gear changes. The 5.5-inch color TFT display finally replaces the old LCD and communicates with the MV Ride app to configure the electronic aids or display navigation. A cruise control even makes an appearance — a nice touch but frankly trivial on a sportbike built to attack.

This MV Agusta F3 800 Rosso test ride reveals a machine that has matured without losing its soul. Its lines, inherited from a design now ten years old, haven't aged a day. Its triple-cylinder engine retains a personality that neither a twin nor an inline-four can replicate. The price remains the main barrier: at this level, the Japanese competition offers more technology and a more reassuring dealer network. But for those seeking a characterful sportbike, built in small series in Varese, capable of reaching 240 km/h while delivering raw riding pleasure, the F3 Rosso ticks the right boxes. It will forgive nothing from beginners, but will generously reward experienced riders who know how to exploit a sharp chassis and a spirited engine.
