Overview
Eighty years. That is the age MV Agusta has chosen to remind the competition why the name "Meccanica Verghera" still lands like a slap across the face of two-wheeled history. While other manufacturers struggle to certify their engines to Euro5+, the Varese firm celebrates its anniversary in its own way: limited series, Ago red, and a numbered plate. The Brutale 800 RR Ottantesimo is not an update — it is a statement of intent.

Let's be honest about the livery: the difference between this special edition and the base model comes down to a vintage logo reworked for the occasion and a numbered plaque mounted beneath the tank. The rest — that blood red and satin silver — already belongs to the range's standard DNA. Of the 500 units produced, each owner receives a certificate of authenticity. The collector will appreciate it; the rider is already thinking only about the three-cylinder waiting beneath the bodywork.
And that counter-rotating crankshaft triple deserves a closer look. The move to Euro5+ compliance hasn't stripped a single horsepower from the power curve: 140 hp at 12,300 rpm, 87 Nm of torque at 10,250 rpm, all from an 801 cc block. Those figures may look modest on paper against a Triumph Street Triple RS and its 130 hp, but the MV engine operates in an entirely different sensory category. The rotational growl at high revs is a signature that no one else offers in this format. The Ottantesimo's key update lies in the revised clutch, which now demands half the lever effort. On a motorcycle this eager to wheelie, it's a welcome concession for urban riding.
The onboard electronics are commensurate with the premium positioning: four configurable riding modes, eight-level traction control, Brembo ABS in Sport or Race mode with Cornering function, six-axis IMU inertial measurement unit, anti-stoppie, wheelie control, launch control, cruise control, and a third-generation bidirectional quickshifter. The 5.5-inch TFT screen brings it all together with solid legibility. For a sport naked at €17,700, this is the expected baseline, and MV delivers without cutting corners. The steel-aluminium tubular trellis frame, 43 mm Marzocchi inverted fork, Sachs monoshock, and radial Brembo calipers on 320 mm front discs form a solid foundation, though none of these components will surprise anyone in 2025.

The real talking point is the positioning. At €17,700, the Brutale 800 RR Ottantesimo is not a motorcycle for everyone. With a dry weight of 195 kg, a seat height of 830 mm, and an engine that truly comes alive in the mid-range, it will suit an experienced rider seeking a naked with genuine character — not a beginner-friendly roadster. Against a Yamaha MT-09 SP or a Street Triple RS, the MV costs noticeably more for comparable performance on paper. What the Japanese or British competition cannot offer is this combination of single-sided swingarm, organic Italian lines, and an engine with a personality all its own. The limited-edition collector will gladly pay the premium. The rational rider may look elsewhere.

What remains is this: in the European premium naked segment, nobody has yet managed to replicate what MV Agusta does with 801 cc and three cylinders. Ten years after the first Brutale 800 RR appeared, the formula still holds. That is commendable — and mildly infuriating for the rest of the industry.
