Overview
Who still remembers motorcycles built by enthusiasts rather than by Excel spreadsheets? In 2002, Moto Guzzi delivered its V11 Sport Naked, a roadster that reeks of the Mandello del Lario workshop and quiet rebellion against Japanese standards. A spiritual descendant of the V7 S, this Italian machine doesn't try to please everyone. It divides, it intrigues, it seduces those willing to work with its character. And character is something its transverse V-twin of 1064 cc has in spades.

The four-stroke twin-cylinder engine, inherited from the California lineage and reworked, produces 91 horsepower at 7800 rpm and 94 Nm of torque at 6000 rpm. On paper, nothing spectacular compared to a Ducati Monster S4 or a Triumph Speed Triple from the same era. But the numbers only tell part of the story. This engine lives through its sensations: the sharp jolts of the pistons on every blip of the throttle, the lateral rocking typical of Guzzis, that mechanical pulse beneath the 22-liter tank like a heart exposed to the open air. On the other hand, the 4000 rpm range lacks bite, and the six-speed gearbox demands an attentive foot. Every gear change must be earned. Power reaches the rear wheel through a shaft drive, reliable and maintenance-free, reinforcing the touring temperament of the whole package.
On the road, the V11 Sport Naked tips the scales at 243 kg wet. You feel it. The steel spine-frame and interrupted double-cradle chassis, despite a wheelbase extended to 1490 mm in 2001 for added stability, reveals its limits when the pace picks up. The 40 mm inverted fork and rear mono-shock handle everyday use adequately, but rough surfaces and high speeds expose a lack of structural rigidity. No point playing hero through fast sequences of corners: this motorcycle is not a sportbike in disguise. It prefers long sweeping curves taken with fluidity, the rider settled on a seat perched at 800 mm, letting the twin's torque do the work on corner exit. That's where it truly comes into its own.

On the braking front, no complaints. The two 320 mm front discs clamped by Brembo four-piston calipers deliver sharp initial bite and precise modulation. This is one of the genuine strengths of this machine, an area where Guzzi didn't cut corners. The 120/70-17 and 180/55-17 tires round out a coherent rolling chassis for mixed use, from Sunday rides to daily commutes without boredom. The claimed top speed of 215 km/h is largely anecdotal: nobody buys a V11 to chase lap times on the highway.
At 11,200 euros in 2002, Moto Guzzi asked for a significant financial commitment. Pricier than a Suzuki SV1000 N, on par with a Monster 900, the price tag was justified by careful build quality and a personality that rivals simply couldn't replicate. The V11 Sport Naked is aimed at riders who've already logged miles, who know what they want and what they no longer want. Not a beginner's bike, not a track tool, not a surgical scalpel. More like a character knife forged the old-fashioned way, with its unapologetic rough edges and charm impossible to counterfeit. The kind of machine you keep for a long time, precisely because it resembles nothing else.
