Overview
When it comes to accessible sport touring, the European market often resembles a battlefield where Japanese manufacturers reign supreme. Yet, a brand like Lexmoto regularly plants its flag on this territory with offerings that are sure to surprise. The 2021 Lexmoto 500DS is the perfect illustration: a 471 cm³ twin-cylinder engine, modest figures, and a promise of versatility at a price that should make the established competition nervous.

Its appearance doesn't court controversy. It embraces the codes of the segment with a sporty but balanced line, full fairing, and a two-person seat that clearly announces its road-going vocation. Inverted front suspension and a single rear shock absorber, coupled with 17-inch wheels shod with 120 tires at the front and 160 at the rear, lay the foundation for credible dynamic handling. The brakes, with double hydraulic front discs and a single rear disc, are there to rein in the 35 horsepower available.
Because that’s where the problem lies, or at least where the manufacturer's choices become apparent. Extracting 35 horsepower from a 471 cm³ twin at 9000 rpm is a resolutely accessible and reliable approach, far from the excesses of superbikes. This liquid-cooled, fuel-injected engine won’t propel its rider into a mad race; it offers a smooth, predictable power, ideal for a novice or a rider seeking a machine without surprises for daily use and interurban journeys. With a 16.5-liter tank, range should follow suit.
The frame and a wheelbase of 1445 mm suggest certain stability on the highway, while the six-speed chain transmission offers the flexibility needed for the city as well as country roads. Faced with a Kawasaki Ninja 400 or a Honda CBR500R, the Lexmoto 500DS doesn’t play in the same league in terms of reputation or detailed finish, but it hits where it counts for a specific audience: equipment/price ratio. It is aimed at those who want a true sport touring silhouette, simple-to-maintain mechanics, and for whom the badge matters less than the complication-free riding experience. It is a motorcycle that assumes its status as a tool above all else, a functional gateway into a world that is often too expensive.
