Overview

Who, in 2004, could claim to take you from Paris to Dakar on a single machine without flinching? KTM, bolstered by its victories in the sand, had the answer with the LC4-E 640 Adventure. A motorcycle built to devour trails, designed as a rally tool, yet civilized enough not to make you suffer on everyday tarmac.

KTM LC4-E 640 ADVENTURE

Beneath the protective fairing lies the proven 625 cc single from the Austrian manufacturer. With 55 horsepower at 7,000 rpm and 56.9 Nm of torque available from just 5,500 rpm, no one will speak of overwhelming power. But that would be missing the point entirely. This four-valve single-cylinder, fed by an 11.5:1 compression ratio and an oversquare 101 x 78 mm bore and stroke, delivers its power with a directness that matches the machine's character. It pulls hard in the midrange, right where it matters when the wheels are spinning on laterite. The five-speed gearbox gets the job done, even if a sixth gear would have been welcome on long straights where the top speed caps out at 165 km/h.

The real feat shows up on the scales: 154 kg dry. For a machine fitted with a 28-liter tank promising rally-worthy range, that figure gives the competition pause for thought. By comparison, a BMW F 650 GS Dakar from the same era tipped the scales some twenty kilos heavier for similar performance. That contained weight, paired with generously long-travel WP suspension (275 mm up front with the 48 mm inverted fork, 300 mm at the rear), turns every rutted track into a playground. The 945 mm seat height does select its riders, admittedly. Shorter riders will have to adapt or invest in a lowered seat.

On the road, the 640 Adventure proves surprisingly pleasant. Braking, handled by a 300 mm disc gripped by a four-piston caliper up front and a 220 mm disc at the rear, does its job with smooth progressivity. The 90/90-21 and 140/80-18 tires betray the off-road vocation, but the dual-sport profiles available at the time offered an honest compromise for pavement. The steel semi-double cradle frame lacks the rigidity of a sportbike chassis, and that's a good thing: it filters, it forgives, it works with the rider rather than constraining them.

At 8,719 euros at the time, the price tag was steep for a single-cylinder. But it was justified by serious equipment and an uncompromising philosophy. The KTM LC4-E 640 Adventure was aimed at those who dreamed of distant trails without settling for an "Adventure" sticker on a tamed dual-sport. A true adventurer's motorcycle, a real one, with the qualities and demands that come with it.
