Overview

Have you ever seen a motorcycle that seems to roar "I'm going to eat you" just by standing still on its stand? The 2009 Kawasaki ZX-6R 600, and its descendants like the 2014 version, embody exactly that feeling. It's not a motorcycle that indulges in frills. It emerges directly from the DNA of the larger ZX-10R, with aggressive bodywork, piercing eyes, and a posture that clearly announces its territory: the track. Kawasaki has always played a subtle game with its 600 lineup, sometimes offering a more touring-oriented and assisted 636 version, while this strictly-sized ZX-6R remains the option for purists. Without ABS or traction control at that time, it demands a rider who masters their technique, a frank dialogue between the throttle and the road.

The major overhaul for this generation was the war against kilograms. The previous edition suffered from a certain bulkiness that penalized it against competitors like the Honda CBR600RR or the Yamaha R6. Akashi engineers therefore scanned the machine, stripping grams from every corner: magnesium cases, special metal camshafts, simplification of systems... The result is a dry weight of 157 kg, a palpable difference that brings it closer to the benchmarks of lightness. This drastic diet, combined with a redesigned perimeter frame and retouched geometry (rake reduced to 24°), transforms its behavior. It becomes incisive, velocity, almost nervous. The inverted BPF fork, inspired by the GSX-R 1000, offers more progressive damping and enhanced stability on corner entry. For the rider, the position is revised for an instinctive connection with the machine: thinner fuel tank, lower and narrower seat. It's a motorcycle that invites total commitment, a close-quarters encounter with the asphalt.

And the engine? This 599 cc inline four-cylinder remains a high-revving precision instrument. With 128 horsepower released at 14,000 rpm and a torque of 66.7 Nm at 11,800 rpm, it may not have the brutality of a 1000, but its response has been refined. Engineers worked on the injection, intake ducts, and ignition to achieve improved progressivity and linearity, particularly in the mid-range. This allows for more precise control of power, even if some purists sometimes regret a less explosive character than that of the Triumph Daytona 675. On the track, however, this finesse becomes an asset. The six-speed gearbox, slipper clutch, and radial braking with 300 mm discs at the front allow you to push the machine towards its theoretical top speed of 270 km/h with increased confidence.

Kawasaki ZX-6R 600

What was the price of a 2015 Kawasaki ZX-6R 600 in France? A machine like this, new in 2014, was listed at €10,499. It's a significant investment for a supersport, but it places the Kawasaki in the same arena as its Japanese rivals. For a track rider or a very sporty touring rider seeking a no-compromise machine, it was a compelling argument. Today, opinions on the 2002 Kawasaki ZX-6R 600, or on the models from the 2000-2001 years, often converge: they were already capable machines, but this 2009-2013 evolution marked a significant leap in terms of aggressiveness, lightness, and precision. It’s not a motorcycle for beginners, nor for those seeking urban convenience with its 17-liter fuel tank and 815 mm seat height. It is the tool of the person who wants to understand the mechanics, feel every reaction, and dominate the curve. Kawasaki has forged here a Ninja that doesn't just follow, it wants to dictate the law in the corners.
