Overview

Do you remember the 2007 Kawasaki ZX-6R, the one that had gained a few kilos against its will and lagged a bit in comparisons? In 2009, Akashi engineers made the radical decision to apply a drastic slimming cure, and the result is this 157 kg dry weight machine, almost 10 kilos lighter than its previous incarnation. We’re talking about a pack of beer less on the luggage rack, a difference that changes everything on a circuit. They tracked this weight everywhere: magnesium cases, special metal camshafts, elimination of sensors and soundproofing, all the way to a redesigned tank. The goal was clear: to catch up, or even surpass, the competition like the Honda CBR600RR in terms of velocity.

This philosophy of weight reduction is reflected throughout the design. The perimeter aluminum frame has been reworked for optimized rear rigidity, and the inclined engine has raised its center of gravity by 16 mm. They even abandoned the under-seat exhaust, typical of the era, for a more classic side mount, in order to better centralize the masses. Everything is done to make this motorcycle turn quickly and precisely. The rider's position is reworked for the track, more engaged, with a seat/footrest/handlebar triangle that brings the body closer to the controls. The tank is thinner for better contact, the seat lower and narrower. It’s a machine that demands to be actively ridden, not a complacent touring bike.

The cycle part is up to this ambition. The 41 mm inverted telescopic fork adopts the BPF system, like on the Suzuki GSX-R 1000, promising a more progressive collapse and better stability on corner entry. Radial braking with 300 mm petal discs and the adjustable Öhlins steering damper complete a very serious package. The engine, this 599 cc inline four-cylinder, hasn’t just been lightly touched up. They worked on the intake ducts, injectors, cam profiles, and ignition to improve mid-range response and linearity. It delivers 128 horsepower at 14000 rpm, a respectable figure, but it’s mainly the way it delivers them, more controllable, that is highlighted. The six-speed gearbox is precise, and the final chain transmission is no surprise.

Kawasaki ZX-6R 600

Ultimately, this 2009 ZX-6R is a game-changing machine in the brand's history. It corrects the flaws of the previous generation with rare determination. It clearly targets the passionate track rider or the lover of lively sportbikes who accepts an engaged position for exceptional tactile feedback. Its price at the time, around 11000 euros, placed it in the tight race of high-end 600s. Today, its status in the used market is interesting. Opinions on the Kawasaki ZX-6R 600 of 2002 or 2000 often highlight their more raw character, while models like the 2015 have evolved towards greater sophistication. This 2009 is a pivot model, a Ninja that has regained its ferocity and lightness, capable of shaking the Yamaha R6 and Honda CBR600RR on their turf. For those looking for a 600 sportbike with a real circuit pedigree and a price that has now fallen, it deserves a close look, although its current price will largely depend on its condition and history.
