Overview

What does a roadster look like when it gets a fairing and dreams of being a bit more touring-focused? Kawasaki attempted this exercise with this 2006 Z 750 S, a dressed-up version of the fiery Z750 naked. The idea was simple: retain the beating heart of the machine, that famous inline four-cylinder derived from the legendary ZX-9R, and graft a front fairing onto it to face the wind on long journeys. The result is a multifaceted motorcycle, a hybrid that oscillates between the roadster’s playfulness and the traveler’s ambitions.

Under this new nose, all of the Z750’s DNA remains. The steel diamond frame, the 748 cc engine delivering 110 horsepower at 11,000 rpm, and that 74.6 Nm of torque available relatively early in the rev range. That’s its advantage over contemporary competitors like the Honda CBR600F or the Yamaha FZ6: a bit more displacement, therefore more muscle at mid-range rpm. You can feel the engine awaken around 5000 rpm, then it takes off towards the redline with that characteristic rage of Kawasaki engines. The injection, revised for this S version, has not calmed it down; it remains a vibrant animal, which doesn’t require constantly playing with the six-speed gearbox to be lively.

The transformation is mainly cosmetic and ergonomic. The small fairing gives a unique look, almost a mini-sportbike, with a bubble that honestly provides protection up to 93 mph. The single seat and redesigned rear fairing, inspired by the ZX-10R, add style. But Kawasaki has also modified the riding position: raised and closer handlebars, a more natural position for the wrists. You lose a bit of the naked’s aggressiveness; the S seems more sensible, less incisive into corners. You need to engage it, tease it with a little more commitment to rediscover its playful side. Stability, however, gains on fast lines, thanks to this fairing which secures the machine.

Where does it fall short? In the practical details. Weather protection is mixed: the bubble does its job, but the fairing’s lines direct water directly onto the rider’s knees when it rains. The seat is no more comfortable than that of the standard version, the passenger footrests are placed too high, and the absence of a center stand is a frustration for adjustments and maintenance. For a roadster that wants to be touring-focused, these shortcomings are shadows on the picture.

Ultimately, this 2006 Kawasaki Z 750 S remains an appealing proposition. It offers an alternative for those who were looking for a roadster with a bit more protection, without sacrificing the engine’s explosive character. Its price of 6999 euros at the time positioned it as a serious option in the mid-size category. For a rider who mixes daily commutes and sporty weekend rides, it bridges the gap. But it won’t convince the pure touring enthusiast, who will reproach it for its limited comfort, nor the radical track rider, who will prefer the naked for its immediate responsiveness. It's a compromise machine, successful dynamically, but with a few concessions on the practical side. A good used subject today for those who know what they want.
