Overview
Who hasn't dreamed of hitting the road on a whim, panniers packed, heading south, without worrying about the budget? The Kawasaki Versys 650 Tourer Plus plays precisely that card. The card of an accessible road trail bike, sold turnkey with all the traveler's gear, at a price that stays under the 8,600-euro mark. On paper, the promise is enticing. In practice, you need to look more closely at what Kawasaki actually brings to the table.

The 649 cc parallel twin develops 69 horsepower at 8,500 rpm with 44.8 Nm of torque available from 6,800 rpm. Nothing earth-shattering, but it's an engine known and respected for its reliability and mid-range flexibility. On main roads and secondary routes alike, it pulls the 214 kg wet weight effortlessly, picks up cleanly in sixth gear, and pushes the machine to 200 km/h on the speedometer. Compared to a Suzuki V-Strom 650 or a Honda CB500X, the Versys positions itself as the most dynamic of the trio, with a tubular steel frame and a 41 mm inverted fork adjustable in preload and rebound. The rear monoshock, with remote preload adjustment, rounds out a suspension package that's adequate for touring without claiming to rival the standards of the segment above.
The real selling point of this Tourer Plus version lies in its standard equipment. Kawasaki delivers the bike with a pair of 28-liter side cases, a single-key lock system, handguards, auxiliary lights, a tank protector, and a gear position indicator on the dashboard. All accessories you'd have to buy separately on the standard version, for a bill that adds up fast at the dealer. The package is well thought out, designed for riders who want to roll out of the garage and aim for the horizon without flipping through catalogs. The absence of a tall windscreen in the bundle is a notable omission, however. With an 846 mm seat height and a tank of nearly 19 liters, the Versys 650 offers honest range and ergonomics suited to medium and tall riders. Shorter riders will have to cope with the height, even though the seat remains accessible thanks to a narrow nose.
On the braking front, the dual front discs with two-piston calipers get the job done without any particular flair. ABS remains optional on this 2015 model year, which is a real weak point against competitors offering it as standard by this time. The six-speed chain drive is smooth and well-spaced, true to the Versys family's reputation. The 120/70 and 160/60 tires on 17-inch rims confirm the machine's road-biased vocation, with predictable handling on both dry and wet tarmac.
The 2015 Kawasaki Versys 650 Tourer Plus is aimed at riders looking for a versatile first adventure-road bike or a secondary machine for eating up miles without pressure. It doesn't claim to play in the big GT league, and that's precisely what makes it strong. No electronic frills, no technological one-upmanship, just a proven engine, a sound chassis, and travel equipment ready to go. The Kawasaki Versys 650 Tourer Plus's price remains its greatest asset against better-equipped but significantly pricier competitors. For those who prioritize the equipment-to-price ratio and mechanical simplicity, it clearly deserves a test ride.
