Overview
Imagine a Sport Chief that goes around the block and comes back with luggage. That's roughly what happened in the Minnetonka offices when Indian's engineers decided to give their sporty custom a bit more substance. The 2025 RT version reinvents nothing — it completes. Two side saddlebags for a total capacity of 37 liters, a reworked two-up seat, raised handlebars, forward-set footpegs. The result tips decidedly toward what Californians call the Club Style, a crossover between a characterful custom and a long-distance tourer, without ever sliding into full-dress touring territory.

The heart of the beast remains that 49-degree V-twin displacing 1890cc, with a generous 103.2 mm bore and a long 113 mm stroke. The Thunderstroke puts out 90 horsepower and, more to the point, 155.9 Nm at 3,300 rpm — a massive torque figure that crushes the road with that particular inertia unique to big American twins. Raw power is not the point here. This engine speaks from the gut, through vibrations that are filtered but present, through a soundtrack that reminds you that Springfield, Massachusetts, has been building machines since 1901. The claimed top speed of 180 km/h makes the ambition clear: this is not a sportbike in disguise, it's a tourer that owns its proportions.
And those proportions — 322 kg fully fueled — fade from your mind faster than you'd expect, thanks to a chassis that punches well above its category. A fully adjustable 43 mm inverted fork, remote-reservoir Fox rear shocks, radially mounted Brembo calipers biting on two 320 mm front discs. That's serious hardware, the kind you usually find on bikes half the weight. The 695 mm seat height helps manage the mass despite the heft, an important point for a machine aimed at experienced riders who aren't necessarily tall.

The onboard electronics live up to segment expectations in 2025. Three riding modes, cruise control, keyless ignition, ABS, traction control, rear cylinder deactivation at standstill to limit heat buildup. A 4-inch circular TFT display centralizes the Ride Command system with GPS navigation and smartphone connectivity. Indian has had the wisdom not to drown the rider in rider aids — no wheelie control on the standard equipment list. The custom's rustic charm survives beneath the technological layer.

Against the Harley-Davidson Low Rider ST, the comparison is inevitable. Both machines share a similar philosophy: a big twin with a strong personality, a long-distance calling dressed in custom clothing, a premium price tag in the neighborhood of €24,000 for the Sport Chief RT. Milwaukee answers with a larger-displacement engine, more generous saddlebags, and better wind protection. Indian counters with a more sophisticated chassis and a cleaner silhouette. The choice between the two comes down to rider sensibility more than any clear-cut objective argument. The target audience — riders over forty with road miles behind them and a few weekends to fill in the calendar — will have their own reasons to lean one way or the other. What is certain is that the Sport Chief RT does not disappoint those looking for a versatile machine with character, capable of eating up the miles without sacrificing the immediate pleasure of riding.
