Overview
The Sport Chief didn’t see the trap coming. Indian had vaguely told her about a small ride with friends, with maybe some surprises, possibly a trip to a club... the idea being to entice her to indulge in other types of escapades. What? To extend her active riding with large pockets to accommodate an evening outfit. When she emerged, she had transformed into the Sport Chief RT.
Transform is a big word. In fact, she finds herself with a pair of small saddlebags on her hips. What she didn't understand about the story and the club evening was that with her luggage, her fork head and her raised handlebar, her philosophy ended up tilting into the Club Style. A trend born in California a long time ago, driven by motorcyclists who sought comfort and performance. In Europe and Japan, they would call it the Sport-GT, with 100 kilos less.
The Sport Chief embodies a lot of the values of this movement. With its RT specification, it allows Bikers to carry 37 liters of gear - the equivalent of a complete change of clothes or a ham per saddlebag. A new two-seater bench is there to add more cachet and comfort. These equipment options are available for other Chief models. To accentuate the cool attitude, the footpegs are placed further forward.
More weight, more looks, more road for this American bad-boy, unchanged in its overall technical aspects. It fully benefits from its huge Thunderstroke 1890 cm3 twin, slightly less powerful since 2025 took away a few Nm. It still sends 15.9 mkg at 3,300 rpm, with the depth, the fat and the impulses of a mechanical orgy from Massachusetts.
The Sport Chief / RT surprises by its sporty side, far from the canons of the segment. Its chassis clashes with radial-mount Brembo brake calipers, a fully adjustable inverted fork and piggyback-type Fox shock absorbers. Once on board, it’s not you who dominates her; it’s her who invites you to dance. The handlebar mounted on machined 152 mm risers encourages arms to grab the elements and every shiver.
An Indian has been a good dose of electronics for some time now. Does this Chief have a lot? No less than 3 Riding Modes (Standard / Sport / Tour), cruise control, keyless start, ABS, a 4-inch circular color TFT screen, the Ride Command system with connectivity and multimedia / GPS app, USB and 12V sockets, LED lighting and timely rear cylinder deactivation to prevent overheating. Traction control.... Anti-wheeling.... Don’t know and don’t care. The Indian has still kept some rustic manners that are very appreciable.
The Indian Sport Chief RT is rather happy to come out of this ambush because she can now go and compete with the Harley Low Rider ST. The same way of life for these two Americans but that of Milwaukee stands out with a larger and more powerful engine, larger saddlebags, a more enveloping fork, and a price.... ah well no, almost the same. One feels like a runaway, the other wants to spend the night in Sin City.
