Overview
The Street Glide Ultra picks up where decades of Tourer models leave off. Designed to traverse vast territories, this majestic motorcycle is nothing less than a reimagining of the celebrated Electra Glide Ultra Classic. The longer the road stretches before it, the more it seems to smile.
The Ultra confirms the styling shift undertaken by Harley since the introduction of the latest Road Glide and Street Glide. The significant stylistic mutations find a complementary echo with unprecedented lower fairings with sharper, less rounded lines. This enhances both protection and style for the modern and striking front fork. It itself is topped with a 10.16 cm taller windshield, while its neck receives new deflectors; adjustable if summer air is needed. Behind this large fascia, the rider would benefit from 60% less turbulence compared to the Ultra Limited.
Transitioning from a bagger (Street Glide) to a Tourer (Ultra), the motorcycle gains presence, demonstration, weight (+25 kg), and notably, comfort. Especially the passenger with a large backrest to support the back and elbows. One doesn’t simply mount it; one settles in. Previously, everyone has appreciated the presence of the Tour Pak, its manifest capacity, and the possibility of stowing an extra large bag or some bulk on the luggage rack. Load it up; it’s ready to handle it. With the top case, saddlebags, and small pockets (4.2 liters each) in the lower fairings, the carrying capacity reaches 139 liters. The luggage is protected by a pair of crash bars. Heated grips are standard equipment.
Seeing the Street Glide Ultra arrive, it would be legitimate to think that it simply replaces the previous Limited. What a mistake! It first takes its place, gives it a stylistic and protective shove, crushes its ego with a more powerful engine, and will finish with a heel in the ribs on entertainment. Rest assured, the Big Block is still in the mix. Except the Milwaukee Eight steps up a notch.
Goodbye 114. The engine is now the Milwaukee Eight 117, still equipped with liquid cooling (for the cylinder heads). The displacement goes from 1868 cm3 to 1923 cm3, with a spectacular result: torque progresses by 6.6%, feasting on 17.8 mkg at 3,500 rpm. While power jumps from 87 to 107 horsepower; reached at the same 5,020 rpm. It seems that Dwayne Johnson has been busy with his coaching, to have gained 1.5 mkg and 20 horsepower. Enough to lift and relaunch the 393 kilograms of the beast in complete tranquility.
Does this number strike you as odd? Naturally. It’s still 23 kilograms less than the model it replaces. Harley has also tackled the chassis with new Showa shock absorbers. Ride management recovers the 4 Riding Modes of the Street Glide, in order to supervise the arrival of torque, engine braking management, throttle response, traction control intervention, and ABS cornering sensitivity. The rider also has at their disposal a cruise control, tire pressure monitoring, a coupled front/rear braking system, hill hold assist... and right in front of them, the latest generation of infotainment.
With Skyline, America sees the future. A gigantic 31 cm screen, offering 4 times more display area than the BOOM! Box GTS. Within the system, it’s Byzantium: GPS navigation system, voice recognition system with conversational commands, WiFi, Bluetooth, smartphone pairing, Apple CarPlay (but not Android Auto), USB port, AM/FM radio, new 200-watt amplifier with 4 channels of 50 watts (twice the power than before), and two 133 mm speakers mounted in the cockpit.
Comfortably installed at the top of the Tourer range for almost 15 years, the Ultra Limited has just been ousted by this new Street Glide Ultra. A real slap in the face for this distant descendant of the Electra Glide. But also an important step towards the future of the range and the renewal of icons. The Street Glide provoked a shock wave with the complete overhaul of its face – this Ultra version drives the point home with new elements capable of making it the new queen of the road at Harley.
