Overview
The Street Glide seemed on the bench, eclipsed since 2019 in its simplest definition, having had to yield its territory to the Special variant, but retaining prestige with the premium CVO version. What about the standard model, the undisputed leader of the Harley catalog?
It simply took the time to stage its return. To take revenge on the Special. To become a severely burnout bagger, to go further, faster, with a hitherto unprecedented notion of Sport Touring at Harley. As muscular as a CVO and as understated as a bobber.
With a touch of ego, the Street Glide has evolved towards a more "bad," almost "smooth criminal" touch, with very simple paint schemes (ideal for a personalization project). Two taciturn colors to choose from, practically no chrome, a plethora of blackened parts: exhaust line, forks, engine, levers and controls, headlights and turn signals, handlebars and handlebars, dashboard and switches, air filter and solo seat – The lady's soul is as thick as suet and rumbles like the wind from Michigan.
Under this Dark demeanor, the aplomb continues with frivolous retouches. Shamelessly borrowed from the Special. Harleys like to practice bartering with each other. The Prodigy wheels are highlighted here with a bronze color finish. The front protection bars are almost twice as substantial as those of the previous Street Glide. Even the tank console has a low profile.
Finally, the only bright moments of the ST are the valve stems and the machined cooling fins of the engine. There lie the reprisals of the Street Glide!
When it received the Milwaukee Eight twin, it had to settle for the 107 ci version while the Special flaunted the 114. It now has more power, with the addition of the very large 117 and its 1923 cm3. The growl, the tone and the breath are no longer the same. Thanks to this heart transplant, torque jumps to 17.1 mkg at 3500 rpm. The previous version peaked at 15.3 mkg. There is also a significant and symbolic increase in horsepower. With the 107 ci, 89 horsepower were in the stable. They have passed the hundred (103 exactly) on the new FLHXST, at the same 5450 rpm. A real beefy heart. One recognizes it by its small refinements, such as the colored bands on the valve covers or its Heavy Breather air filter. This is enough to unleash wrestler-style launches, in the throes of a tempered character, falsely tired and very fat with American mechanics.
The difference in velocity between the two sisters is serious. Yet, at a standstill, the two protagonists look almost like fake twins. The Street Glide distinguishes itself from the Special mainly thanks to its saddlebags, not seeking to cover the end of the exhausts, its two-person seat, its more extensive choice of colors, the shorter front fender, and its smaller engine – still 1868 cm3.
The frame retains the characteristics of the family, with its steel double cradle touring frame. The 49 mm forks have a double valve system to manage damping. The rear shocks can only be adjusted for preload. ABS completes the Reflex interconnected braking system consisting of 3 300 mm discs. To stop 369 kilos + the crew, rocked by the twin or the sound system.
Entertainment can also be conceived with the Boom Box GTS, equipped with a 6.5-inch color and touch TFT screen. The multimedia console manages GPS navigation, radio, telephone via Bluetooth, MP3 playback via several supports, a voice recognition system, and 4 x 25 watts of sound. The on-board electronics also include cruise control, Daymaker LED headlights, the Smart Security hands-free system with alarm, and the inimitable dashboard in the style of an old American car with the arrangement of its multiple dials. The whole is housed in the wide Batwing headstock, topped with a small windshield to preserve the style.
What a comeback for the Street Glide! Here it is equipped with a power that only a few elect of the Harley range have hitherto had the privilege of. In ST version, it allows you to enjoy a huge twin in unostentatious touring. As an option, you can request more active safety, with a large amount of electronics with the RDRS. A pack including the interconnected brakes, ABS, traction control and residual torque control, all sensitive to the angle thanks to the embedded IMU; to which are added tire pressure monitoring and hill-hold assist.
