Overview
Who would have bet on the survival of a parallelogram fork at the dawn of the 21st century? Yet, here is the soul of this Harley-Davidson FXSTS Springer Softail. An assumed mechanical anachronism, with origins dating back to the 1930s, which, at the turn of the 2000s, continues to proclaim its identity with wild exuberance. Heavier and more expensive than a conventional telescopic fork, it offers a certain comfort and, above all, a devastating style that transforms every stop into a spectacle. You don't ride it, you exhibit a piece of rolling history, a true Testors Harley-Davidson FXSTS Springer Softail 1/9 scale model in life size.

Beneath this collector's front end beats a modernized heart, the famous Twin Cam 88B of 1450 cm³. With 67 horsepower and, above all, 106 Nm of torque available from 3200 rpm, it provides a range and sonic voluptuousness that the old 1340 could not offer, all accompanied by a five-speed gearbox that is much more civilized. The engine breathes health, and the Softail frame, with its concealed shock absorbers, maintains the myth of a rigid drive while ensuring rather healthy handling. The engine is solid, the character is there, but it is precisely this vigor that makes the beast's weakness so glaring.
Because this 340 kg custom, fully fueled, is equipped with rather… historical braking. A single 292 mm disc must contain the mass, clamped by a two-piston caliper. Compared to the Japanese competitors of the time, already equipped with double discs, the Softail struggles to reassure. This is the price to pay for having retained this Springer fork, which could not accommodate the new calipers during the range restyling. You have to anticipate, dose, and accept this compromise in exchange for panache.
With its 19-liter tank, a 642 mm seat height, and this 1.66-meter wheelbase, the Springer positions itself as a cruising and display machine. It targets the aesthetic globetrotter, the one for whom the journey counts more than the destination, and who accepts to pay nearly 20,000 euros for a motorized sculpture. It is not a motorcycle for those seeking pure performance, but for those who want to embody a living chapter of the Harley legend. It will forgive you for not exceeding 170 km/h of maximum speed, but don't forgive yourself for driving it without a smile.
